Turn based or real time (like star ocean)Hakud0ushi
star ocean is prolly my 2nd favorite rpg but that game was just amazing with item creation and just so many possibilites for item setups and everything
Turn based, especially turn based strategy.
I usually think of rpgs and action games as being like apple pie and pizza; great for their own reasons, but not so good when you try to mush them together. :P

I see where your coming from, but isn't pizza techincally a type of pie. And don't they have pineapple pizza?
My favourite would be turn-based.
The thing is though - I don't really care whatever battle system is, but my favourite would be the tactics-style battle system. For instance, Final Fantasy Tactics, Kartia, Ogre Battle, Front Mission, Field Commander, and so on.
Of course, that style isn't listed. But the turn-based is the closest to it.
ATB and turn-based.Strife88
yeah what he said... atb and turn-based are my favourites cause ffX and 10-2 plus i like the battling system .. so that is why it is is my favourite game on ps2

Yeah I'm with you on that. Turn based strategy is what an RPG is suppossed to have, though so few really have unfortunately. And even worse the trend to dilute RPG's even further seems to be increasing as more and more seem to being going to action. Some are ok but if all do it you won't really have any RPG's, just action/hack-n-slash games being called them.
Possibly my favorite battle system is the one they use for the mario based rpgs (superstar saga-paper mario etc) turn based but with timed button presses, which can make you hit harder or miss or dodge attacks based on your reactions. As someone mentioned Shadow Hearts and Magna Carta those are the only games on ps2 I know of that also use timing. I feel it is probably the most involving.
real time action based is good too, as is strategy grids.. I think most pc rpgs I have played use the fkeys to use your special attacks and magic and mouse clicks to attack, and that works as well.
I dont know what ATB or ADB stand for..
