I love First Person Shooters and have played most of the ones PS2 has to offer, here are quick reviews of the ones I'm familiar with, in order of goodness. -Killzone--This is my favorite single player experience on PS2. The story, weapons, characters, level design--it's all great. Plus you gain 3 team members (each with unique abilities) throughout the game and can choose who to play with on each level, which keeps the game exciting. Though if you're like me you'll just choose Rico and shoot up everything with his huge gun. The environment is constantly changing from desert to swamp to snow which is also really cool. After you've completed the single player you can battle against bots, friends, or play online--all of which are hours of fun. My only problem with the multiplayer is you can only choose from 2 characters, but that's a small gripe for everything this game does right. I would recommend this first person shooter before any others on PS2 because it has so much to offer. -Cold Winter--It was a toss-up for me between this and Killzone for best single player experience. Cold Winter is such a new and different take on the first person shooter. It's like a James Bond game but grittier, more violent, and more creative. Not only is the gameplay great--you can blast off enemies limbs off in several variations, you can mix common objects together to create molotov coctails, time bombs, and tons of other gadgets, and you can pick up chairs and throw them or flip over tables to give you cover from enemy fire. The game also features the most extensive list of real-world and made up weapons I've ever seen, and they are some of the most fun weapons to use. It also has one of the best stories I've ever played through in a First Person shooter, written by my favorite comic book writer, Warren Ellis. There is online and 4-player offline multiplayer, which is very reminiscent of 'Goldeneye' and will keep you and your friends entertained for hours blasting each others legs off. -Red Faction II--This game's single player is not the best. It's decent and worth playing through once--I hear the first one has a much better story, but having played it recently it is definitely outdated. The main reason I recommend Red Faction II is because I've never put more hours into a game before or after this one. The multiplayer is so fun, it's perfectly balanced, there are tons of characters to choose from, over 30 levels, great music, great weapon selection, destructible environments, you can play 4 player split screen with several bots. It may be outdated by now, but I'm confident that even a new player will love the multiplayer. -Timesplitters: Future Perfect--I have not played through this game's single player since I don't own it, I'm still planning on buying it because the multiplayer is great. I have played the multiplayer with friends and it has the most multiplayer options and is one of the most entertaining multiplayer games on PS2. Most would probably argue that this is the best multiplayer experience on PS2 so I would highly recommend it. I have a soft spot for Red Faction II but I think Timesplitters: Future Perfect would probably appeal to a wider audience, especially since it is newer. There are tons of levels and modes to choose from, you can play 4-player split screen with I think like 16 bots (I could be wrong) and the game has a great sense of humor. The challenge games are also another great addition, giving you a 3rd mode of gameplay besides single player and deathmatch. You can also play online, I saw my friend try to play online like a year ago and no one was on, so I'm not sure if anyone would be on nowadays. But yeah, like most people say, this is the ultimate PS2 first-person shooter, and is a great party game to play with your friends. -Darkwatch--this game has great graphics for ps2 and the twist of fighting skeletons and demons in the old west makes it really fresh and interesting. The single player is really fun, you'll constantly find yourself in really intense battles blasting away hordes of enemies and you get vampire abilities which really adds a new level to the gameplay. I played through the co-op with my friend and we beat it in a day or 2, it was still a lot of fun though. I would recommend it. The multiplayer would've been great if you could add bots, there is no online multiplayer and the levels are just too big to keep you and one friend interested for too long. It is fun taking turns killing each other and using your vampire abilities in multiplayer for a little while. -Black--I haven't played this one but a friend of mine has. He says it's one of the best FPS experiences he's had but it's way too short and the lack of multiplayer makes it not worth buying, but ya gotta rent it and play through it once. -Unreal Tournament--It's hard to recommend this over Quake III, they're both excellent deathmatch-only games, with similar gameplay but everything else is completely different. Unreal Tournament does offer more modes of gameplay and will probably hold your interest longer. Besides the amazing deathmatch, there's capture the flag, and a mode where you have to defend your base which is really cool, and you get to try out all the modes when you play through the single player game. Only let-down is the lack of online multiplayer. -Quake III: Revolution--I played the Quake III demo on my PC constantly back in the day, then I got it for Dreamcast, then after I traded my Dreamcast in, I got it for PS2. If you like deathmatch, Quake III is a non-stop fragfest that, at least for me, never gets old. There are a ton of levels, and I just love the dirty hellish feel the game has. I've played through this game on every difficulty, and when there was no longer a challenge on "Nightmare" I even bought it for my Mac so I could play online, where it stays fresh and there are tons of sweet skins and levels to download. The load times are pretty long, and It's a shame you can't play the PS2 version online, but if you like Deathmatch this is a must-have. -Area 51--I rented this game a while ago and at the time I was really impressed with its graphics for being a PS2 game. What I played of the story mode was cool, you're main character is voiced by David Duchovny which was awesome, there's a lot of creepy atmosophere. I believe you explore through the levels using a flashlight which makes it even scarier, the aliens and level design are sweet looking and you'll definitely find it challenging at times. There are also twists and turns and innovative new gameplay methods. The only flaw I noticed during my short time with the game was that the multiplayer was no good for two players, the levels were too big so it took forever to find each other. Still, I would definitely recommend this game. -Medal of Honor--They're all good, especially playing co-op--"Frontline" does not have co-op or multiplayer but is probably the best single player. The others all have co-op and multiplayer. They're all pretty similar but if you run out of first person shooters, beating these in a day with a friend is fun. -Half-Life--I started playing Half-Life on PC years ago and thought it was awesome. My friend has Half-Life on PS2 and it's somewhat dated at this point but it's still a critically acclaimed single player game. What I really like about the PS2 version is the added co-op mode, it's a whole new mini-story mode added for 2 players to play through, and you have to work together to solve the puzzles and get through the game. The co-op mode is beatable in a day but it is really fun to play through, so at least rent the game and try it out. I've never beaten the single player but I have always like what I played of it. The game also has a deathmatch mode, which I don't remember being that much fun, but overall it's worth at least a rental, although you could buy it used for rental price these days. -Project Snowblind--I wanted to play this game forever but just never got around to buying it. It sounds cool, the story sounds interesting, it has a bunch of players online. So recently I bought it and played through the first few levels and was just completely bored. The lack of splitscreen multiplayer sucks, I'd still like to give it another chance but at this point I can't recommend this game, no matter how cool the box makes it look. I read a bunch of other threads on Gamespot and it seems pretty much unamimous that people just couldn't get into this game. -Urban Chaos--I rented this game after reading Gamespot's review and was expecting a lot. I played through the first few levels and it was not what I expected, at times it's decent blasting off the bad guys limbs but not as good as Cold Winter. There were a couple innovative parts, little scenes where you have to perform actions to get through a burning building and rescue someone. There are a lot of timed missions which are pretty dumb for a first person shooter. Again there is no split-screen multiplayer, only online so you can't enjoy the game with your friends. So I pretty much hated this game. My friend borrowed it and I think he beat it, he didn't really like it either, it's a pretty forgettable game. -Tribes: Aerial Assault--I used to own this game and I could never figure out what the crap was going on. You have a jet pack and fly around and shoot people, but it was so clunky and bad I traded it in immediately. -Deus Ex--a horrible boring first person shooter/rpg, one of the worst video game experiences I've ever had, I don't know why I played through so much of it before trading it in. -Soldier of Fortune: Gold Edition--I bought this game used not too long ago after running out of first person shooters to play. I read gamespot's review and it got like a 7/10 and mentioned that the multiplayer was cool. I didn't really consider that this was like a PS2 launch title so back then a 7 is not what a 7 is today, I think Killzone got a 7--jeez. Anyway this game is the worst first person shooter I have ever played. The story is really cheesy like some arcade game where terrorists capture a little girl or something. The graphics are barely more advanced than Nintendo 64, you can blow guys limbs off which is the one thing it has going for it, but when I really knew I had to trade the game in was when I tried a split-screen multiplayer match with my friend. It took forever to load, then we start the match and it's nonstop lag, like you can't even look left or right without total lag, so it was completely unplayable. I don't think it was just my copy, never buy this game.razzkazz   I agree compleetly with you, however i do think that cold winter s storyline was more exciting.
