I think it won't be until the next gen.....maybe 4 or 5 years at most. It's still selling pretty good and I'm sure Sony makes a mint on each PS2 they sell.
After the price drops to $99, they'll probably continue manufacturing the console for another 2 years - but it hasn't even dropped to 99 yet , so yeah - it'll be around for a while.
Not likely until 2009. This year, there'll be games coming out for the PS2 and there are still a handfull for exclusives for it. Besides, publishers aren't stupid enough to ignore the 120million install base on the PS2 either. I know many has jumped to the next gen, but majority is still on the PS2.
I think it will probably be early to late 2009 because if they stop making them too early they'll lose money because a lot of people can't aford a PS3.
The fact that the PS2 sold 100,000 MORE UNITS(worldwide) than the PS3 for the 5 weeks of the holiday season, and the price of the machine vs. its successor, I think the PS2 will be supported until the PS3 actually takes off. With that said,..If Sony is smart (nope), 2007 will probally be the last "Sony supported" xmas for the PS2. With the shape that the PS3 is in Sony will be focusing on titles for there current gen platform. Other dev will keep the PS2 going on strong for many years though. 120 million systems sold world wide!! That means that when Sony cans the unit and makes the cost of releasing official sony endorsed games at the discount rate (dead system), we will see TONS of software from small dev companies published by medium range distributors.
I think that sony will stop making PS2 games in the end of this year. Because a lot of players will have PS3. Maciek91_PL
I actually think if they do stop at the end of this year it is because not enough players have got the PS3 and they are trying to force everyone's hand. The PS3 won't show what it can really do for a little while yet, and the price does put many people off, so my prediction is after 2009.
I dont get that either, why are they still coming out with ps2 games and sysytems. If the only reason is money then thats fine. But if you went out to get a ps2 is it because you dont have enough money for the ps3, they have almost all the same games that are new. I can understand if its because its too expensive. But there are people that will buy both ps2 and 3 i donr know why.
as far as games go, i think by the end of this year they will stop producing games...but there is still soo many ps2 games out there right now that the console will still be sold
Games are drying up now. It's a trickle for the the year. IMO companies are wrapping up any production they have on PS2 titles as I write this. Focus is shifting firmly towards next gen as PS3 is selling well now. So long PS2, I'll love you for a long time to come, and game-on to your wickedness tillsenility sets in.
Not alot of new games for the PS2 comming out in 2008. By 2008, PS3 will sell more and PS2's will be dead. But it's ok, the PS2 has made MUCH more games (most PS2 games kick ass)than the X-Box or Gamecube. Also, the games are gonna be cheaper.
