In terms of difficulty and quality, Grand Theft Auto III is easily the best. It defined the standards of the sub-genre and even Rockstar North hasn't been able to re-capture the charm and addictiveness of the game in years. If there was only one GTA you could play, I would always choose GTA3; There's simply nothing else like it.

III is outdated along with Vice City. Right stick analog for camera control is a standard now. III may be revolutionary, but, it's younger siblings have outdone it like nothing. Small touches such as camera control, tires popped, sniping people inside cars, swimming, bike riding, genuine flying (though flying the Dodo in III was fun), small car customization, free aim on all weapons, crouching, jetski riding, wall climbing, and so much more have made the games so much better.

GTA3. I remember when it came out. Me and all my friends were in total awe over it. It was so vast and explorable. WOW - is what i remember thinking lol.

San Andreas was by far the best as far as gameplay, scenery, character customization, different things to do, etc...  I liked the characters & music in III and Vice City better, though.  The ghetto thug characters in video games are getting played out, IMO.

While GTAIII was a revolutionary jump for video games, it doesn't change the fact that GTA SA is a bit better than VC and III.  They didn't change any of the good stuff, they just improved upon small areas like camera angles and realism.  Also adding swimming, gambling, and skydiving made the game ALOT more fun if you ask me.  I hated how you would die if you fell into the water in VC or GTAIII.  Stupid if you ask me, they should have had swimming in the first place.  Thats how i see it.  Now hopefully GTAIV is at least as good as GTAIII.

I always argue against San Andreas because I didn't find it as high quality as the previous two games. The fall from smart comedy, innudeno, and pop culture references (Ex. Liberty City Survivor) to outright raunchy remarks ("Burp the worm") ruins the game by itself. The addition of all the "fan service elements," like parachuting and gambling, took away from the basic run-and-gun and driving aspects that the series is [supposed to be] centered around. The RPG elements, like turf-defending, dating, exercising, and shooting-for-experience, were good ideas, but not suited for the series. Here's my reasoning: GTA is about doing what you want, but when the player is forced to stop what he or she is doing to defend a portion of your turf, date a girl before the day is through, or exercise to "stay in shape," the player is not doing what he or she wants on the general map; Why not play Harvest Moon instead? For the RPG elements added to shooting, the game should have been designed so the player got better on his or her own. That could have only occured if the missions were designed with some foresight. (I suppose if you're too busy piloting planes or floating around on a jetpack, you won't have time for shooting.) After all, in GTA3 and Vice City, the player found better weapons as he or she advanced through the game. (Ex. Ammu-Nation on Staunton vs. Annu-Nation on Portland.) The graphics by themselves could be argued as worse than Vice City's. There may be more map to explore, but that meant more textures were recycled. The slowdown, clipping, and "late draw-in" made the game technologically inferior to other games during its time. The character models weren't exactly detailed either. I don't think everything Rockstar North did to San Andreas was wrong, but I think they've taken the series in the worst direction possible. The focus has been "bigger, not better" and it shows through the changes that have been made. Hopefully, this doesn't upset fans too much.

I understand when people make a list of the best games of all time, putting games on the list that set standards ahead of games that may have actually been better. but in this case even though GTA3 set the standard, vice city and san andreas blew it away. In my opinion i like vice city the best mainly bc of the theme. I like san andreas a lot too but still get bored with it after plying for a while.  i still havent beaten it bc i just stopped playing. I dont like how u have to constantly eat and workout.

GTA3 was my first entrance into the genre.  While, I really enjoyed the game, the story, and it sense of humor.  GTA: VC had far more interesting characters, story, and had me laughing to tears on a few occassions. GTA:SA was a pretty good addition to the series, but it just wasn't as interesting as the first two.

Still, GTA3 has got to be the most fun out of any of them.  VC was cramped and I couldn't maintain high speeds when I just want to go fast.  SA was huge, but the small 2 lane roads made it tough just to push a car to its limits.  GTA3 on the other hand, had plenty of 4 lane roads that allowed me to push a car to top speed and maintain it.  I loved getting a 3 wanted star level and to see how long I could go without the cops catching me.

When it comes down to a game you can just sit back and enjoy.  I would have to say that GTA3 is #1, with GTA: VC at a close second.  It will be interesting to see how GTA4 compares to the previous three, when it comes out to the PC....Although, with Mass Effect coming out to the XBOX360 I might get it on that system.

i prefer 3 myself. it really just joked about everything and never took itslef too seriously. i got more laughs out of that one.

SA and VC were good but they were just a bit too serious in comparison. i didnt enjoy them as much personally.

GTA San Andreas because it has the biggest map and more vehicles.
