I'd go with the new slim-line. If all you find is the fat one however, make sure it's not the 30001 model ( I think you can check in the back ).

If you want to know which one breaks easier, I'm pretty sure its the slim.

I've had the the fat one for five years and it still works till today. It's very durable too and can support online play. Although the lens is hard to get to to fix that damn disc error problem. The slim however is great to bring around places and the lens is easier to fix.

I would have to say the original one is better, because from what I've seen and heard, the slim one is the one that is responsible for breaking easier, or just having problems in general

The faft one dosn't break fast when it falls but the slim one does. My fat one got burned wrong AC adaptor :( So I decided to get the slim one. It's better in graphics and other stuff.

There are two types of slims: One with the old hardware and one with new hardware.

The old Hardware (70000 - 75000 series) has a bad habit of getting extremely hot if left on for extended periods. This won't damage your console unless of course you leave a game running while you are sleeping, thus it overheats and melts some of the internal hardware.

The new Hardware (77000 - 79000 series) fixed the overheating problem (it still gets warm, but doesn't damage the console as easily as before). The problem with these versions is that they utilize new hardware internally, which unfortunately won't play certain games up to par like other PS2 models, or won't even play them at all. All of the major tites work fine though. The list is on playstation.com.

Personally, I would wait for the 90000 series to come out this year if you are a compatibility fiend. They should be in the states by the spring, as they came out in Japan in November, and we usually get new PS2 hardware 6 months after them. I will be getting a 90000 series for a spare room in my house.

Fat one is more durable; a lot more durable. Mines taken a lot of beatings and still works fine (thank G-d). The slimline has an ethernet port right in it so it's easier for online play.

I don't know if it's fair to call one "better" or not. I have a Slim, and its never had a problem reading or running any disk like my fat one used to. It's probably a matter of how well you take care of it that will determine how long it lasts.

The bottom line is that whatever model you buy should do its job as that's what it was designed to do. **** does indeed happen and just like everyone's mortality, nothing is guaranteed except for one day, your PS2 will break. When is the question, only time will tell.
