So there's been a lot of mixed feelings about final fantasy..and which one was the best. The scores say ff6 or ff12...but why listen to other reviewers? Which do YOU think is the best one?

Honestly, minus the publicity and stupid fangirls who only watched the movie and squeal over cloud and write fanfiction about him without knowing a thing about him expect he was emo in the movie, I like Final Fantasy VII.

Reasons!!

1) It has a very good story...one of the best in an rpg game I've seen. It's solid, with room for sequels and prequels..(although i think it should've been all anime done honestly, instead of into games...last order was good! with the *** and eng voice casts of the movie!) but also it has major twists that keep you wanting more.

2) game play is different and very interesting. The materia mastering system is really cool, and all the extras like chocobo inbreeding and weapon battling, and gold saucer period...makes it very enjoyable.

3) the characters!! The characters are so well developed with their own backstories and in depth relationships with each other. Sadly, it lacks in total character development because it doesn't go to far into some of their pasts (like vincents..only in dirge of cerberus..or yuffies) but that could be because they are side characters and you don't have to get them (but you should ^^).

4) Music. Nobou did a fantastic job on the epic music that really captures this game! Like Jenova absolute...was an awesome fight song, or Who Am I? was a well developed song depicting Cloud's confusion of himself..were awesome. Or even the famous 'Aeris's Theme' which is sad but peaceful like her or 'Those Chosen By The Planet' that helps amplify Sephiroth's insanity.  My personal favourite is "You Can Hear The Cry Of The Planet" which i love sooo much!

Anyway, there are many MANY other reasons why ff7 was my choice...the reason i chose it after my close second ff6 (or ff3 to you american SNES holders) because it has more of a catchy story and better development of characters. Kefka is still the ultimate villian tho XD crazy from the start!

What are your oppinions on my choice...the games, or which one you prefer?
(note: remember, if u haven't played all of them..state that because your vote could be biased based on the fact that you haven't played the game and some stuff may be spoiled for you...or you may get shot down. This is a debate and opinion board..make sure you know. ^^ cuz i'm warning you now.)

My top four:

1.  Final Fantasy VII - great story, characters, limit breaks, and materia system.

2.  Final Fantasy Tactics - very deep, good job/abilities system.

3.  Final Fantasy IX

4.  Final Fantasy X

I will go with FFX too, I don't know I can't somehow put that game in second place.  I guess I really like that game.

Of all the games in the series? Oh man, Final Fantasy VIII wins by a huge margin. Hahaha, seriously, Final Fantasy VII gets my vote. FFVI is next on the list, then IX, XII, IV, and then X. VIII and V have special places at the bottom of the list.

I've only played FF1, FF2, FFX, FFX-2, and FFXII. Out of those games I've found FFXII to be my favorite and of superior quality and more appealing gameplay mechanics than the others. If I ever come across a copy of FFVII I'll be sure to buy it but I haven't been able to find any of the PS1 Final Fantasy games in my area so my opinion is restricted to a select few of the series that I have obtained.

FF9 is my favourite... I played through half of 7 and 8, but lost interest... I couldn't stand all the random battles.

FF10 was alright but the endign was kinda crappy. FF12 is great so far, but not as good as 9

It's nice to see some fellow ff7 supporters! You all most likely love the game for the same reasons I do. :)

FFX - ya, this is a good solid game. I feel the storyline isn't as great as some previous titles, but that can be debated easily. The combat and gameplay are excellent too. The twist of the story is really neat too...however, the main character really ruined it. I found Tidus wayyy too whiny and annoying. To go from Cloud, to cold hearted Squall, to frisky Zidane, to whiny Tidus...then to non important crappy Vaan...it just seems they are losing their main char edge that S-E of ours.

Anyway...the ending of FFX was bad? I don't understand how it was bad (unless u found it too emotional and sad). I thought it was a pretty awesome twist and neat way to end an interesting game.
FFX is definitely third or fourth on my list.

FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX too many random battles? Isn't that the point of an rpg game o.o i know sometimes it's ridiculus (not to mention a title, but in different games) but i thought they did a good job this time. And that fact that u can get items which make it so u don't encounter enemies..i duno, i like random battles because it lvl's u up.

FFVI,FFVII,FFVIII,FFIX,FFX plots are too boring? All of these games have major twists in them that throw u completely off. FFXII is better? FFXII was the easiest ending to predict because it had no twists or turns. I like the rpgs that have some 'twist' in them. It adds to the excitement.

Now don't get me wrong, i like linear rpgs with not much of a twist in them too...(like FFXII) and FFXII is fourth or fifth on the list.

I agree with FFXII being boring. The plot isn't all that interesting i think. It's more of the awesome battle system and extras...not for it's amazing plot. It's a very linear straight forward plot. but the game itself has many side quests, extras to keep u entertained so it turned out pretty awesome.

FFIV, FFIII and lower...when saying they don't have much of a plot, you have to remember they were on consoles that couldn't support very long games. They are still decently fun FF games...and like someone said that they prefer FFIV, they can be highly entertaining and fun.

Anyway glad to see some interest here. ^^

X

Character development was bar-none.

You can even get past Tidus's whiny character and look deep inside at what he feels and what drives him.

X-2 ruined it for me, personally.

Final Fantasy 7 and Chrono Trigger! And FF 7 only wins because of the FF topic, but if it was Squeenix games then Chrono Trigger and Xenogears would totally rate. But yeah FF 7.

My pick is FFX and FFX-2, essentially one game. I really like the costume change system taken from ffv.  However, i will say that each game except for a couple (ff9, ff8, ff2, ff3, ff11) were the best in their time.  But if each game were remade with today's cg's, voices, effects, graphics i will say FF6 wins hands down.

1st. Final Fantasy 7

2nd. Final Fantasy 8 and Final Fantasy 10

lukey9898

I agree, it's one of those 3

my PERSONAL top 3

 1. Final Fantasy 8

2. Final Fantasy 7

3. Final Fantasy 10

but you could switch the first two easily. i think for most ff7 was probably the more complete game, but character development and story and emotion is huge for me and 8 was better there.

Personally, my 'favorite' is FFIX. However, I think that there are FF games with better gameplay and graphics, it is just that I happen to like that game the most. Sort of like how I really enjoyed FF X-2. In terms of sheer playability and quality, however, I would say that my picks would be FFVII, X, and XII.

I know the majority loved it, but I can't seem to figure out why some people didn't like FFX. The story, the music, the gameplay, and the characters were all amazing. It quite possibly has the most intensely emotional and moving story of any game I've ever played. That, mixed together with the amazing music and characters, results in FFX being the best Final Fantasy to date. And why does everyone hate Tidus? Alot of people claim him to be whiny. I think people dislike him so much because he is so different from main characters such as Cloud or Squall. You see, Tidus is very opinionated and speaks his mind. Characters such as the stoic youths of FFVII and FFVIII are the exact opposite. They are quite, calm, and collected. People are so used to main characters like this because they've been around so long. And once S-E decides to mix it up a bit, everyone has a heart attack. If you ask me, Cloud is probably even more of a pansey than everyone claims Tidus to be. If you think about it, people like Cloud keep all there emotions bottled up. The way they feel inside is probably drastically different to what they appear to be on the outside. I can also explain why Tidus can be a bit annoying and whiny at times. Consider, your the star player of a major sports team, your at one of your games, competing at what you love the most. And suddenly your entire city is attacked by an enormous entity called Sin. You immediately get told by some guy that your story is about to begin, then you get thrusted into a place that is very from your own. You soon learn that your 1,000 years in the future and the one place you used to call home is destroyed and no longer inhabited. Consider all of these circumstances, and then tell me that Tidus doesn't have every right to be whiny and annoying.

I could go on all day about why FFX is the best FF around. Maybe I should write a book about it. Anyway, if you don't agree with me, that's fine. Just quite doggin' FFX all the time. I doubt I changed very many people's minds, but I hope you look at the game a bit different now.

FF10 was too linear with incredibly.....fruity....voice acting - not enough variance in side quests; EXTREMELY EASY. No world Map.

"I know the majority loved it, but I can't seem to figure out why some people didn't like FFX" why this sentence ?

i just dont understand why do you want all people to love FFX the most. why do you want people to be robots with one choice ?

each one of us is unique, has different tastes, why noone cant understand this ? same for people who says "that one sux", " it was terrible" etc. why just cant you accept that people are different ?

that text shows your thoughts only, its not true for many people. you say "story, music, gameplay are all amazing" but thats just according to you. there are many people even hate this game because of its story, music, gameplay.

i like FFVIII , because its story development was the best for me, it was flowing very smoothly and there was not a single seperation if you dont go searching side quests, all GFs, extras. it had the most realistic and the best developed characters. do you remember Irvine's moments ? he was cool looking guy and he was trying to show off, but they showed his innerself in assassination mission and same for others. i must say Squall made me feel like i was living the game, events, his behaviours were so close to mine when i was playing that game. many people dislike junction system but i really liked it, it was easy to use and you were easily making your characters more powerful also battle moves were so good.

so i can tell you why FFVIII was good too or i can tell why XXXX was bad, but what is the point ? noone is comparing them with unfair, unreal facts , so why defending ?

we should have different choices so that will make us different from robots. topic asks the best, means 1 game that is better than others, according to you ofcourse.

i have FFXII but i didnt get a chance to start it, my friend said its story is more politic that fantasy, so i understand why so many dont like it, but i think i will love it, but again, not more than VIII.

i say FFVIII, you say FFX, others say FFVII. even all people in the world say FFVII is the best FF game ever, that wont change my ideas about it, i dont think your would change too. so let people have different tastes. if someone dislikes FFX, let him/her be. you dont need to understand all people, so instead of trying to change their ideas on their tastes, just accepting is better. why there should be only 2 colors ?

maybe i should not post anything here after i get up from bed...

My top 3:

1) FF VIII (very deep story, some of the best cg ever, best characters)

2) FF VI (great story, a lot different characters and powers and everyone with his own story and past)

3) FF VII y X  (a tie, the first great FF and the first great FF for ps2, both with great stories and very good combat systems)

You immediately get told by some guy that your story is about to begin, then you get thrusted into a place that is very different from your own.

It's not that I want all people to like it the most, I just want people to stop saying it's this horrendous game just because it wasn't like the ones before it. People these days seem to shy away from change. People may not like it, but I would still like them to appreciate the game for what it's worth. This goes for all games. I am a firm believer that that there isn't an actual "bad" game. There is something good to say to just about every game out there. For example, I regularly express my dislike for FFVII, mainly because people glorify it to no end. It's extremely annoying.  But just because I didn't like the game, doesn't mean there isn't elements of it that I liked. Please, don't misunderstand me for trying to change people's tastes. I enjoy hearing people's opinions. I just don't like it when someone demonizes a game just because they didn't like it. Just saying you disliked it more than the other FF's would suffice.

P.S.-I enjoyed reading your opinions on FFVIII and the FFX paragraph I posted. I have not played FFVIII yet. In light of reading your view on it, I'm considering buying it now.:D

my favorite game of all time. i dont know how old you are; but games like that seem to have more of an impact if you play it at a young age. i played 7,8,9,10 from around age 8-14.

good news is its still in production so you can get a copy for like $10-$15.

i agree, sometimes i'm annoyed with those nonstop cheerings for nothing lol. and thank you

and in similar thoughts, i like all kind of games too, except really really cliche ones with nothing. i gave some games really bad scores in my list but i beat even those games. and again, i agree on this saying " if you dont say something good, then dont say it". but there are people who likes to flame somethings, bothersome ( i wrote similar things in another topic ? -.- )

--no need to flame games, if anyone wants flaming i can flame anything, even the games i love most. pointless... bothersome--

also FFVIII has the best music among FF series for me and i have all OSTs from 7 to 10. musics of a game really affect the player, i think thats why Chrono Cross had 10 score from gamespot, which has the best OST. but in some singles, FFX had moments, like "to zanarkand" and "sutedaki ne" which may overcome others, but still FFVIII - Premonition has no equal for me, also "Eyes On Me" is something so different from whole musics of FF OSTs ( its a song more than a music and romatic one ? even its not my style i admit its so great )

FFX is my second favorite btw. even i was not impressed at first, i really liked it later and Tidus is great character. but i may like FFXII more when i finish it because i like deep stories alot and i heard its deep and political.

i hope you can enjoy it, because there are many FF8 dislikers, its easy too.

I have only played from FFVII on. However my favorite one is FFXII.

I didn't get the end of VIII at all and if what I think happened happened, then I didn't like the ending.

Personally, I didn't like Cloud because he messed himself up by being the way he was, so that is why I didn't like FFVII as much as other people.

I just didn't really like anything about FFIX because Zidane's tail was too disturbing for me. The only character I liked in the game was Vivi.

FFX- the turn based battles made it too easy for me and I like a challenge, but otherwise it was good.

FFX-2 was pretty much ruined and didn't really hold up to the FF standards. Plus it was really easy to beat.

FFXII- I liked being able to choose the monsters I fought. Ashe was more of a main character than Vaan was. I also liked the license grid and being able to choose the type of weapon I wanted the character to use, not a preset type. Each character holds each type of weapon differently. Had a good story for a lineal story line. Being able to hunt monsters and getting paid for it was a good addition to the game. The game made it feel more like I could choose what happened in the game, although I couldn't.

hmmmm....well in my opinion

for best storyline it had to be VII couldn't decide on 2nd because I always remember the bad points in the plots of VIII,IX and X

For battle system I'd say probably XII mainly because they did such a good job on such a risky turn in the series.X a close second by speeding up battles by getting rid of ATB.

Best Character Development it has to go to VI it was very impressive and deep for each individual character and side quests opened more for each character.

Best special attacks( limit breaks,overdrive,desperation,etc...)my favourite had to be VIII with squall's lion heart it was so satisfying beating omega using it. VII limit breaks were very cool also IX's trances were the worst because it always activated without your control.

best sidequests I thought I had to go with X as the celestial weapons was a cool idea to power them up before proper use.

and finally one of my favourites Best Ultimate Boss killing them proves tactics( well mabey on lower levels) emerald and ruby were one of the coolest imo .FFX's penance + dark aeons were a good challenge but ruled out because zamato just made it simple.

I never put in graphics because the newer games obviously have better graphics than the last.

Overall I have no idea which one was the best?.................................................................................................................

so i think this post was pretty pointless

Even though the story in FFXII was very political and un-FF like, I still enjoyed every minute of it, and I think you will too. I t is also the one of the hardest games i've played in a long time. Probably the hardest FF there is. So if your looking for a challenge, look no further, FFXII will provide it for you.

I admit it!  I don't have a favourite FF game.  They are all tops in my book, every last one of them.  They all rock!

No one is dissing FFX you know. Just majority people don't believe it's the best FF game. Sure it's great and all, I thoroughly enjoyed it but you have to remember, opinions change. No one will think the way you do.

I usually think in more technical terms when i choose my favourite; it's a game developer thing.
Here's something,

FFX's main character, sure was believable. But at the same time...fake. Usually the most successful games have that ass or jerk of a main character...or even a hyperactive main character. Tidus is too...normal. Too plain. Some of S'E's most successful main characters were ones that didn't talk at all (Crono, Serge).
Cloud was good because he was different - not your regular type of person; and in the end, he opens up. A man with no memory of his past, recreates it through someone elses experiences and life..and realizes his entire life he was living was a lie.
Squall was an ass, cold hearted kept to himself..didn't want to rely on anyone because of his past, someone he loved dearly left him..and he swore to himself he wouldn't rely on anyone anymore. eventually, he learns to open up and protect them..his family. He learns to love, and learns that not everyone will be gone tomorrow.
Zidane was a hyperactive guy who just loved womanizing and jumping around spiritfully. He teaches people around him to believe in theirself and trust their instincts. Even though he has no idea what or who he is, he makes everyone happy in his path and believes in himself.
Cecil was a guy who became a dark knight and commanded an army for a king..once he realized the king was corrupt, he second guessed his life and changed who he was for the better. he became a paladin, sworn to defend everyone from the evil.
FFV main character (name escapes me), was just a simple guy, living his own life until WHAM his entire life gets changed..he get's wrapped up in world problems, with a princess..and the chrystals that protect their world. Then he gets sent to another planet! (sound familiar?)
Terra, one of the only female leads, was controlled by a psycho (whoo kefka!) and broke free of his mind control. She slowly tries to become human, and find out what he means to love, and choose your own path in life. She finds out she's not a normal human, and after a long time, she realizes she's special..and she can protect ppl, rather then depend on them.

etc. Tidus was just too much like everyone else..when these other main characters were different. Look at Sora, he was shipped to a new world..yet he wasn't as emotional about it. He had fun.
Tidus is too normal. Main characters are more exciting in rpg's when..they are different.

Anyway, no one says FFX is bad. That's just fanboy talk hun ^^ I like it, in fact, it's one of the games i love playing over. The only main character i truly hate is Vaan. Balthier should've been main character :P or even Ashe is better then him.

alrighty. enough of this blabber. talk to you all later!

Squall was the only one in the game who had any real (dyanmic) character development. The characters in the game were not fleshed out and recieved little if any developement. They all shared one back story together. Except Rinoa. The characters were flat and had static development. Final Fantasy 8 was far from having the best character development.
