If you liked FF7 and 8 then Final Fantasy X is probably the best game for you. The jump from say Final Fantasy 8 and then to 12 would probably be too much - the graphics and gameplay are considerably different and evolved that it probably wouldn't feel like a final fantasy game to you if you're looking for more like 7 and 8.
If you don't mind a good number of changes, then you might do well investing in 12. In summary, Final Fantasy X is far more traditional and beats 12 considerably in terms of story and character and general final fantasy 'ness'. 12, however, features much improved gameplay which makes the battles in X seem plodding and at times, dare I say, dull.
So it's up to you, if you want to be daring, go for 12 and you might be pleasantly surprised, or you'll just feel like it isn't anything like 8 at all (which it isn't really). What I'd recommend though, is go into X, complete it, maybe divulge in X-2, then give 12 a try.
A friend lent me FFX for awhile and i thought while it had a great story and all, the water ball sport mini games ruined it. After recently just finishing FF8 i am looking at getting FF12 soon.

I think I played Blitzball for around 40 hours or so, one of the most enjoyable mini games I have played. Spent a lot of time playing the management blitzball in X-2 as well.

I'm going to go against the crowd and say FF12. FFX is probably my least favorite Final Fantasy, and while FFX-2 is great fun as long you don't take it seriously, you should really play FFX first. FF12 looks gorgeous, has a great battle system, and I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline. The changes in the battle system aren't really that huge, either. Yes, it will take some getting used to, but it's basically the same concept as other FFs, only you're free to move around and can put your characters on auto-pilot.
Of course, FFX is a lot more like the older FF games. But FF12 is by far the better game, IMO.
I say start with X, then give X-2 a rental to see if you like it. I don't agree with those here that say it's a disappointment at all, and I say decide for yourself. After you've wet your whistle on X and X-2, then get XII.
They're all worth playing (imo) and they all have their pros and cons.
I'm going to get another PS2 soon(my other one broke about 3 years ago) and I want to get a Final Fantasy because I liked 7 and 8 and want another one. So if you had to pick ONE Final Fantasy for the PS2 which would it be?Corpse_Vanishes
well clearly.. since you played 7 and 8 you most definately need not get a ps2 and get a nes and snes instead and play the original games.
