I honestly havent played it in maybe 8 years and I still have fond memories of it. I dont have the time, nor the desire, to really replay the game (unless it gets a remake) and I dont follow any of the fanfics and havent watched the advent children movie, but it is still one of my favorite titles of all time.
I just had fond memories of the game and spent many, many, hours playing it and will always have it in my top 5 games of all time. That said, I am looking forward to crisis core.

Same, I have very fond memories of the game as well.
However, I really wish that they would let the game be. Advent Children was ok, and Crisis Core looks like it may have potential but I'm just really tired of SquareEnix digging up the FFVII grave and committing sacrilege on the bones of something "sacred" (Dirge of Cerberus, cough...). Next thing you know, Yuffie will be getting her own game. Unless they plan to do a remake of the original, I personally don't want to see anymore in the way of FFVII game spinoffs.
That's because FF VII was and still is an icon for RPG. Its only downside is its graphics, but imagine if this game had FFX's graphics. It would be THE RPG (of course this is my personal opinion). 8)No. It would still be a flawed and overrated RPG. Your opinion is not law.
I haven't seen any other RPG that can match the great story and character development that has FF VII.dr_jashugan
The reason is the storyline and the characters. The storyline really is confusing though, if you see Advent Children, and play Dirge of Cerberus, it begins to get a bit complicated and contradicts with itself. But the characters are seriously awesome, Vincent is insane, and Sephiroth, well, he's pretty sick to, don't like Cloud though. Another reason it's a high rated rpg is because back in its time it was the best thing out there(in other peoples opinion, I personally liked tactics more), that stuck, and grew. Now it's considered one of the pioneers of the world of RPG's. But I to don't see the big deal about it.Undead_ArthasWhat did it pioneer? It did nothing new, and set standards for the genre that did not need to be set - like since FFVII, it is no longer acceptable for an RPG to be less than 50 hours or whatever. That's freaking stupid. IT leads to filler just to make it longer. Screw that. Chrono Trigger was 30 hours in lenght, but you know what? All 30 hours of it was AWESOME

Final Fantasy 7 the first RPG I had ever played from start to finish so it held a place in my heart as "The Greatest Game Ever". As time passed and I played more games I realized how shallow, boring, and like mostSquare gamesare, was incredibly easy. If you asked me 5 years ago what the best game ever was, it would have been it. Now if you ask me, it would certainly not be anyFinal Fantasyas they all seem incredibly shallow.

fs_metal, this is a forum and all full of everyones opinions, i dont know if its just me, but it sounds like FFVII offended u in some way cuz u seem pissed off whenever someone says something good bout the game..... dont hate greatness
Because strangely enough the year 1997 was the apex of human civilization and playing games from then reminds everyone of those times. It wasnt just games that reached the state of perfection but music as well... who can forget Hanson's MmmBop or Aqua's Barbie Girl. Things never got better than that.
No wonder the Heaven's Gate people took it as a sign.
FF7 was the first RPG to take it to the next level - it didn't just move fwd as little as possible to make sales but Square gave it everything they had. The characters were each individual masterpieces in their histories and relationships and no-one could come up with a story as intricate and shocking as this was(I went and cried when Aeris died). Even modern movies can't compete with the game's story. It was the defining game for a whole generation and the whole RPG genre.
There are but a handful of games that will be remembered like this. Halo will be one as the FPS-definer, Doom, SimCity, GTA etc. The game just brings back vivid and emotional memories for everyone who's played it. Playing the game now just doesn't serve it justice, you had to play back in the day to truly understand the context and meaning of the classic
you can't stop perfection.
But seriously, I preferred Tactics to FF7.
NavigatorsGhost
I agree. Tactics focused more on battle. FF7 is just a classic...a legend. People love it because it not only defined an era but also a generation. I love classics like Bubble Bobble. It may be boring to some or even cheesy but it takes me to a great place mentally, the same withh FF7. Many people came of age with this game and it will always bring them back there just remembering it. That is the criteria of a CLASSIC
I do not know what the big deal is either. In my opinion Final Fantasy 6 was way better than Final Fantasy 7. Sephiroth wants to shoot a meteor at the planet, Kefka tears a hole in the planet. Final Fantasy 6 WINS.Valmar76
Really Kefka made a hole in the planet!
Thats Awosome!!!

What?@ Offended me? You are readking alot more into what I said than is there. Teh fact is that the game did not break new ground. What gets me, though, is that there are alot of people htat act ignorant to otehr RPGs, let alone the rest of the series just because of this one game. It's like they can't see past FFVII. It is not, never has been and never will be the end all beat all game. Ignorance is a pet peeve of mineYou realize that everything you said about FFVII and why it 'took it to the next level' could also be stated, quite truthfully, about FFVI, right? If you ask me, the first RPG to 'take it to the next level' was FFIV, if not PSIIFF7 was the first RPG to take it to the next level - it didn't just move fwd as little as possible to make sales but Square gave it everything they had. FF VII is good but the Final Fantasy series grew after it. There were not so good ones like, IMHO, FF IX but really awesome FFs like FFX (IMHO is the best FF, great graphics, great story, awesome gameplay mechanics, good side quests and extras, etc).
I'm not stuck in one Final Fantasy, FF VII was my favorite but it has been replaced by FF X and this one might be replaced by FF XII (haven't played it yet =D)
FF VII is great but there are other FFs out there people!!! 8)
It has one of the coolest/bada** villians in history in Sephiroth. It has one of the hottest rpg girls in Tifa.
It has one of the coolest/most mysterious side character in Vincent.
It has one of the coolest/bada** heroes in history in Cloud.
It had some of the best graphics and storyline of a video game for its time.
It has one of the shocking most memorable moments in gaming history in Aeris death.
It single handedly commercialized rpgs outside of Japan.
It has one of the coolest/bada** summons in Knights of the Round. 130,000 damage anyone?
It has some of the toughest boss battles in history in the weapons.
It spawned an awesome movie that was rereleased as a collectors edition.
Its main characters are always in the finals of gamefaqs battles.
It was voted the #2 greatest game in history by Famitsu magazine.
Gee, i wonder why people havent moved on. :PCarmilla31
Everythign bolded is pure opinion or atleast partly opinion (It did spawn a movie, but whether or not that movie is awesome is pure opinion).
The italics statement is not true. It did not single handedly commercialize RPGs outside of Japan. It finished the work that Chrono Trigger started.
The underlined tatement is based on opinions, though it is not an opinion itself
IX is my favorite of the PSone era games. Tactics was awesome as well. IX is probably my second favorite post VI game, behind XII, which ranks as number 2 on my overall list, below VIFF VII is good but the Final Fantasy series grew after it. He did alot more than that
He poisoned the water at Castle Doma, effectively killing everone. He took joy in hearing screams of pain. He attempted to burn down Castle Firago. He killed both General Leo and the Emperor. He moved the goddess statues and, in doing so, effectively destroyed the world. He then took over what was left of the world. He built a tower and ruled from itps top, using his power to destroy villages and crush the hope and dreams of the people in the world. YEah. Villians just don't come any more evil than Kefka
yeh although i wouldnt get your hopes up about xii...imo it was mediocre ( the gambit system ruined it for me, aswell as the extremely weak espers ) anyway, just lik eeveryone else said, it was great for its day... plus the gaming world was evolving, and to many people this started with ffvii.
also i think ffviii was the worst out ouf them all from vi upwards.

I strongly agree with FFVIII being hte worst, thoiugh replace "vi and up" with "of all"

I know that he did all of that as well, but I was comparing what they did to the planet themselves to eachother. As I said, Kefka beats Sephiroth 0-1.

If you have had played the game when it came out in it's time frame, then you would understand why no RPG up to date can rival this masterpiece.
Millions who did (Including myself) hold it dear as a standard for how RPG's should be made. Story and Characters. Many try to follow in FFVII footsteps, but none achieve greatness as big.
The simple though of a remake of FFVII (which will arrive in time) is enough to send thousands of people to buy a new console.
If you haven't played it before and only do so now, you won't understand how epic FFVII was and still is. That's a fact.
There is no need to bash what you don't understand.
