Hey I was wondering if you guys could give your input on my situation.  I currently own a Fat PS2. I bought it almost six years ago. I started university about 3 years ago. I haven't really used my PS2 too much while in school. Also I had just built myself a new PC so I was more into PC gaming at the time. Now that the prices for PS2 games have dropped considerbly I have started playing games for PS2 again. I recently bought a Network Adapter and have started playing online as well. I was wondering if I should sell my PS2 and get a Slim PS2? How many years do you think my current PS2 has left? So far my PS2 seems to be playing perfectly and I have not had any problems with it. I have never had the Disc Read Error that many people complain about. I have about 17 games I would be willing to sell with my PS2 (10 PS2 and 7 PS1) for a new console. I am wondering if it is worth it? Will my PS2 break down? I hear alot of reports of systems breaking down but mine hasn't shown any problems. The only recent problem was that NHL2K7 would freeze up in the season mode (no problems in franchise) when asked to save my profile. That problem has been reported with the PS3 and XBOX 360 on the 2K forums so I'm thinking that is an issue with the game rather than my console. If you guys were in my situation would you sell your PS2 for a new slim one or do you think this older 6 year old machine will last?

I think it's a good decision tho many guys say to me it's a "manly" machine, so if your "manly" feel free to keep it, but i think it's better to get the slim one as it has the internet facility installed in it and takes up no space and there are less chances of breaking the disk tray with the slimeline - joy !

I was actually in a similar situation just a couple of months ago. I had a Fatty that worked perfectly fine (with the exception of a sometimes wonky disk tray) but I bought a Slimline to replace it. Why? I just wanted one dammit. :P

Well if your current PS2 is acting crazy, then id say go for it. Especially if your gonna use it for your "main" gaming system for awhile.

The slim PS2 has more better things then the Fat PS2. That's why they made it.

Coming from a guy who owned both (until the PS3 launch) I would definately recommend keeping the Fatty. The slims have absolutely no cooling method, no fan or anything, so in extended play sessions, or if you system is in tight quarters (as I would imagine from a school dorm) they tend to overheat, not a slam against the slim, just a fact. so you may want to hang onto the fatty.

Besides, it is working fine and shows no sign of stopping. And you will actually not get that much on a trade in for the fatty to put towards the price of a slim.

Well, i'd more so reccomend a 20 gig ps3 instead. You can do alot more with a fat ps2 like use a hard drive to store your games and play import games very easy. Still, if you only want to play mainstream games, go for it.

I personally would keep the standard/"fatty" PS2, stick a hard drive in and use HDLoader/Advance. Certainly goes a long way to preserving a PlayStation2.

Slim PS2s are terrible. You cant play them without getting extremely hot.And no HD support, and they break easily.

I believe I've actually had my fatty for 6 years now, and really all I've noticed is the load times have slowed down, at least I believe they have. My friend has a slim and he says the load times are a lot better, although he has some problems with a perfect condition DDR Extreme 1 or 2 I can't remember, but he used to have a fatty and he's picky lol so I believe his load time opinion. I've only had one problem with my fatty actually besides the possible load time slow down, which is some disc read problem, I believe it was actually on a DVD and one game at the same time, I don't remember what game or what DVD but it very well could have been a PS1 game, and this was simply solved with the white gear fix. It took me 2 or 3 times but I've never had to mess with it since and it works like normal again (aside from that load time thing) I was very attracted to the silver slim PS2 but not for the price. Also as a collector I really couldn't let go of my PS2 to trade in, especially since the trade in price blows. I would have both, have the fatty archived and for backup actually. But yea, I've had it since when Shadow of Destiny and Zone of the Enders were brand spankin' new, and I intend to run it to just before it completely dies so I can still play my original PS2 owned titles for old times sake, or pass it down to my kids as a fat hunk of gaming tech lol. I say keep it, save your money for PS3 lol. I also agree with the cooling, even though the slim has a fan, nothing can compare to the amount of heat spewed out the back of the fatty. Hope this helps!

Tell us what you do!

I'm confused, my friend has the special audio video cable in order to use progressive scan on his big screen which I believe is also HD and it removes all the pixely crap from regular games stretched out, even from widescreen games without pro. scan. Is that not the HD you're talking about?

I think he meant Hard Drive support. But compared to how Sony hyped up the PS2 near its launch, there certainly seems to be a huge lack of games that do support even at least 480p.

should sell my PS2 and get a Slim PS2? Dignifying
No, you won't get much for your big ones and will have to spend more money on buying the exact same console, but smaller. Besides if your unit is working properly, there is no need.
How many years do you think my current PS2 has left?Dignifying
It could die today, tomorrow, a year, two years, answer is, I don't know. I know all that feeling of uncertainty, but that is just Sony trying to get into your head to waste money on a different version of the exact same thing. If your PS2 breaks, buy another one. Just don't buy something that does not need to be replaced.

I originally said that My system appears to be working fine. I must say that recently if I hear carefully I can hear a ticking noise when my PS2 loads a game and at times when accessing the disc. I have found that people have said to have heard a ticking sound before getting the disc error. I am wondering if this ticking sound is a precursor to that. My PS2 still has been able to play games fine but has frozen once during game play since I've started this post... Let me know if this should be a sign that I should go with a newer PS2.

I have a silver slim and fat black. I plan to keep both. Love the size and look of the slim (plus its kick ass silver) and the fatty has been with me since I bought it eons ago, I could never retire the thing (plus it works fine). This is the first system I will be keeping for collection purposes.

Well actually other than the thin size, and the build in online connection, I would stick with the thick ps2, it has better ventalation,  less chance of dust getting to the lens, less chance of disc skipping my good friend has a slim one and he would love to get the thick one, and trade it for the thick one.. I mean he  showed me the difference in the disc performance.. it does not take as much for the disc to skip in the slim one but then again nothing should hit your ps2 but go head you should not have anything to lose do what ever you feel, but if you current ps2 if doing fine, I would just stick with that one

You better get a fatt one you con play longer with it and its much more powre full than the slim one (if you like to play a long time)

But if you like to play online or short periods Take the slim one
