Does anybody actually buy into this bs about the PS3 will have a 10 year cycle.  I mean if M$ made a console in the next 4yrs or so it would make the ps3 look garbage and do sony really think that it will be around for another 5 years after that.

I believe it. The thing about these new systems is that I don't know if developers will ever max them out. Yes, I beleive that they are totally capable of doing so. I just think that a title that maxes out these systems would cost an obscene amount of money. I can't think of a whole lot devs that would be able/willing to sink so many resources into a game that could flop. I'm sure that there are plenty of people that wil pipe up and tell me that I'm an idiot for saying this but we'll see.

I wouldn't be surprised if MS jumped the gun, but I don't think it will make Sony go to the PS4 that much sooner than they are currently planning.

that is the thing who would buy a next gen in four years. the ps 2 is still out selling the next gen now add a next next gen to that. i call it bankrupt for microsoft. what are they going to do abandon the 360. i don't think it will happen because the 360 is doing better than the xbox. but this is a ps 3 forum so i will keep my mouth shut and say that yes the ps 3 will last ten years. think about it the ps 1 lasted barly ten years but the ps 2 is on its 8th year and still out selling everything. the game dev are still going to make game for the ps 2 because they now there is still 100 million users out there.

I don't. Technology is moving so fast that any video card designed/released five years from now will be more powerful than the PS3 graphic card. And like you say, it would make PS3 graphics look really bad. I'm almost sure Sony will release the next PS in 5-6 years.

well even if the ps3 have a 10 year or more life cycle it would be good cuz it has the blu-ray player... if u carefully look at the ps2 i bet there are some people still using it to play dvd movies and u know how long dvd players been out?

Yeah but the way sony make is sound like the PS3 is so powerful that thier wont need to be another PS for 10 years and anybody who has heard or moore law will know that this is garbage.  I mean the PS3 could be around for 10 years in the same respect that the PS2 looks like it will be but as a lesser tier to a PS4.

I think its possible for them to keep the system going for ten years. Granted, I think it's also a sure thing that Microsoft will realease a new system within the next four to six years. However, if Sony manages to build a large user base again, like the ps2, I think they will be able to extend it's life span. Microsoft's meathod to making money is to make as much as possible. Anyone that actually has been paying attention to their business methods would see that they tend to release new products as soon as they can to force people to buy their newest product (look at Vista, I mean what the heck is wrong with XP). Thus they will try to release the newest, greates thing as soon as they can. Sony also wants to make money, but they have been more about building a user base sucking as much out of that base as possible (point in case, the ps2, which as has been pointed out, is still outselling both the 360 and of course the ps3).

Even if Microsoft puts out a new system though, developers would happily develop for  a consol theyknow has a userbase, not only that, it will be easier for them to develop for the system they've been using for the last six or so years. I think it comes down to the amount of consols Sony can sell. If they sell enough, even if M$ does create a system that blows the ps3 out of the water, the ps3 will probably just get run down ports and Sony will continue to release the best games they can for a few years.

the thing is how far are the game makers going to go. now how long and money it takes this gen to make a game. it needs to stop somewere. the pc graphics cards are going to more powerful but for the rest of the pc owners im sure it will take them longer to upgrade. so the pc games will have to stay with the % of people that still have there 5 year old cards. the ps 3 will last ten years like ps 1 and 2. im not saying that they won't be a ps 4 before then but probly 6-7 years. the graphics will become more life like this gen so by the time the next gen comes it will be little update in graphics. i bet they will concintrate on gameplay and how you play like nintendo this gen. what do you want so good graphics that it take years befare a game comes out.

You hit the nail on the head my friend.  DO NOT believe that the PS3 has a 10 year lifespan.  Sony doesnt even believe that.  That is part of the hype they built arount their console.  What you said, is the ONLY reason why no console can ever have a 10 year life span as long as there is competition.  It is only common sense that if microsoft released another console 4 years from now, that Sony would be FORCED to realease another one.  You cant seriously believe that another console release 4 years from now wont be more powerful than the PS3.  The PS3 does not have direct x 10.  Even though it has a cell, it only has 512 MB of RAM, and 512 K of L2 Cache.

In four years, another company (it can even be nintendo) can release a console with not only a more powerful processor, but with 1 GB of RAM, and even larger cache.  IF you believe other wise, you are letting Sony blind you.  You are forgetting how QUICKLY computer tecnology advances.   Sure the PS3 is powerful, but it will never be more powerful than a future console.  Especially considering how 4 years from now, all of the current components in the PS3 will be CHEAPER.  Meaning, more poewrful components can be included at perhaps even a lesser price.

um hello how come the ps 1 and soon ps 2. there might be ps 4 before that but the life cycle will last 10 years.

I really would not be surprised if ms came out with the xbox 3600 or whatever in about 3-4 years...

I was seriously worrying about that when i bought the ps3..Because they where so much faster than usual with the 360 and i would not be surprised if they where to do it again...

But i though..heck i need to play MGS4 and FF13..so i had no choice really.. and if ms really keeps on bringing consoles out that fast i would never buy any of their consoles just out of principle and because my wallet probably could not take it.

I think all the console makers should have an agreement.. a new console every 5-6 years... no sooner.. later can be possible offcourse.. but at least that would be fair to the consumer.... but then again do they really care ab out the consumer.. or just whats in their wallet

It will probably be selling for 10 years (look at the PS2 and PS), but they'll come out with a PS4 in 6 to 8 years.

Well lets use common sense here. The PS1 had a 10 year cycle (they finally stoped production in 2005 and it was still selling) The PS2 is coming to it's 8th year and is leading all current gen consoles as far, so it's momentum will surely carry it through the 10 year mark (I would think this is an obvious observation) so ... why wouldn't the PS3 last 10 years? There's a logical pattern built already. If MS brings out a box in 4-5 years and people still surport them then they are dumbasses. Sony doesn't not react to what MS does. They have their plan and they follow it. If MS brings out another console in 4 years, they are pretty much done.
