I'll try to keep this short. My PS3 will be on the top floor of my house, while my router is on the main floor. I've decided the easiest way to run a cable up stairs is to drill a hole in the floor behind my desk, run the cable through the basement, and run it up a vent. (Air intake. No hot air is in the vent.)

Unfortunately, the distance is approximately 95 feet.

Now, what should I expect to spend on a 100+ ft. ethernet cable, and what is a good brand? I've seen some for $20 and some for $60. Is there a difference? Also, are there any side effects to using such a long cable?

Thanks in advance.

100 ft is not a good idea cuz you'll lose the connection alot because its so long it's better to go get a wireless router IMO

Please. I DO have experience with networking and 95 feet of Ethernet cable provides a MUCH better connection than 95 feet of air and drywall. I've just never had to BUY the cable, I've always just hooked it up.

Unless you're a hideous chud, hit on some chicks that work @ Best Buy or somethin'.  On company discount it'd be about two bucks. I run 3  50' lengths from the router to my living room (2) and bedroom (1) for my game systems and experience seamless online gameplay. On my staff purchase they were literally  two bucks each and since like seven bucks with tax  is cheaper (and a better conection ) than getting a nice wireless router it was the way to go for me. A few guys I know run wireless connections on their consoles and while you'll get a lot of " I dunno what you're talking about, it runs just fine for me." I'm playing with these boneheads and sometimes they lag like essohbee's.

Yeah dude......100ft with wireless?  A little extreame!  You should be able to grab a 100ft cable and it's work like a charm.  The only time that you'll run into problems with RJ45 is if you run it more than 100ft.

I don't have any but to go wireless.  It's close to 35ft to the wireless router, but I'm thinking about daisy-chaining another wireless router into the mix and see if that'll work.

Any suggestions?  The best strenght that I can get right now is about 25-30 percent.

You people claiming that 100ft. is too extreme for a wireless router to function must absolutely no nothing about wireless setups.  But if you don't mind drilling into the floor of your house to run an ethernet cable then by all means the cable connection will be cheaper.

Unless you plan on extending the cable out past 295 feet with cat6. You will be fine using a 100ft cat6 cable - obviously.

Just for the record, wether you run the cable or go wireless, both will work fine at 100'. Anyone who tells you different is ignorant of the topic. Your best bet is to get 2 50' cables and a coupler. The whole set up should cost less than $85, coupler included.

Most offices these days have several wall mounted hubs in each room, which strengthen signals. You'll rarely see a bunch of cables running straight from the POP to each workstation.

most offices run T1 personally, i wouldnt go drilling holes through my floors just for a eathernet cable, if your gonna do it do it right cuz if your the homeowner and you decide to seel the house down the road no buyer is going to like random holes drilled in the floors

It's not like it's a gaping hole. It just needs to be about 1/2 inch wide for the RJ45 jack to fit through. Besides, most floors have carpet over them, so if this is the case, you'll never see it.

lol 100 feet is nothing - my buddy has a house that is about 250' away from his parents house, and he has a cheap linksys wireless game adapter in his house, and he's using the internet from his parents wireless router.  He even uses their internet on his laptop!  his parent's have their computer in their basement, and he gets internet from them, in any room of the house.  do whatever you want but i seriously doubt you'll have a problem with wireless....

Get a 100-150ft. Cat5e cable and go ahead and run the line.  You shouldn't pay more than $20-30 for the cable.  Running a cable is always far better than doing wireless if you can.  On wireless you'd be lucky to pull the full 54mbps and on cat5 you can do 100/1000mbps because the PS3 does have a gigabit port on it, thats if your router also hadles gigabit(doubtful).

I found a 150ft. Cat5e cable at the Source (think Radio Shack, but owned by Circuit City) for $24.99. Another poster mentioned Cat6 for longer cables. Is Cat5e enough for a 150ft. cable?

Like I said, I don't know much (anything?) about Ethernet cables.

It should work without any problems and it doesn't really matter how much you pay for them as long as you choose your way through your building correctly. I wouldn't go along power cords or you need a more expensive cable with higbetter shield. An alternative would be going over power, you can reachpretty fast connectionswith the actual devices. I wouldn't suggest going WLAN, but if, then buy a device with power, gaming routers of sitecom are usually great

Yeah I run 1000's of feet at work, and it will be fine. How do you think networks for major companies work.
