"Although not ready for primetime quite yet, Hitachi claims it has developed a prototype four layer Blu-Ray disc capable of holding 100GB of data. While concept 100GB multi-layer discs from companies such as TDK and Panasonic have been announced before, they have always required a specially developed optical head in the player to read the disc. Hitachi, however, claims that current Blu-ray drives would only require a firmware upgrade to be compatible with the new disc.

The manufacturer is reportedly working to stabilize signal quality before considering a commercial roll-out for the new discs, and is also working on an eight-layer variant of the technology, which would yield a Blu-ray Disc capable of holding 200GB."

It's too bad the PS3 can't write to disk or that would be mass storage for very cheap. Sony should make some compilation disks of PS2 games on Bluray, like 'Top 50 PS2'.

Wow that would be so insane. 200 gigs, that's almost more than what my computer has. Games on a disk like that would have 100 levels or 4000 cars or 20 cities. That's crazy. But then again they would probably cost an arm and a leg. Only time will tell.

Thats hypothetically speaking.

Sony wants you to believe that garbage. Look at games like Heavenly Sword and Uncharted. Both games are short and have been said to be under 12 hours.

If developing a game was free, then yes PS3 games would be capable of this. But developing 75 hour games with gigantic worlds/universes is not going to be the main use for the game. Its for uncompressed audio and CGI mainly.

garbage or not if games are going to use 100 0r 200 gb blu-ray disk the price for the games will go through the roof and developers will know this and won't risk it. it's all about making a profit not making a great system or disk that wont make money.

this is why i think the ps3 is lagging in sales because of what i just said. i think the xbox 360 is better suited for making and playing games.

It was just posted. 100GB disks have been announced before but if you read it, it says these ones will be able to do it without new hardware so they could be used with the PS3. As for using 100GB leading to soaring production costs, that's true right now but not too long ago games came on CDs so they've increased in size about 10x in the last 10 years and a lot of games coming out now are already using 20GB.

DANG, well i for one would be very happy if Square Enix came out with a 100gb disc with all the FF games in existence on it. that would rock. Or a GTA collectors edition disc. this will be insanely awsome.

if it works on the ps3 then that means we'll be having games with longer length, more contents, and plenty of room for developers to work freely.

Compilation disks would be a great idea. Companies would love it as its more profits with very little outlay. I'm sure if companies released a compilation disk alongside the next-gen release of a series it would sell like hotcakes. Imagine a disk with all the previous resident evils on it going on sale alongside Resi 5, or the same with the MGS series when MGS4 comes out. If they included a little bonus content such as artwork or previously japanese only titles i'd definately buy them.

I don't think lighting requires disc space, but you could get some awesome textures put together (look at Rage made id games). Also isn't the Blu-ray drive on the PS3 only double layer? If so then my guess is that we can only use 50 gigabyte discs (which is more than enough). We must also consider the load time restraints that enormous levels and uncompressed sound would cause oftentimes making them impractical. This will be nice though because it leaves plenty of room for FMVs and extras (FF 13, Stranglehold with Hard Boiled included on disc).

Uncharted is 12-15 hours. And look at how many enemies Heavenly Sword can have on screen at a time.

Since when did more space become a bad thing. PS1 CD... FF7 took 3 discs, I'd much rather have it on one. PS2/X360 DVD ... and we're now seeing games on multiple discs. So with a firmware update to PS3 and B-ray players that could read a 100 GB Discs by next year, that frickin awesome! To think that developers won't use that space is ridiculous. Mayabe not tomorrow, and maybe not for "4000 cars" or "20 cities" ( Although, I would like to see that), but if for no other reason that Final Fantasy's plethora of FULL HD FMVs, I'm all for it. Uncompressed Audio ( Always a great debate) is someting I really enojoy, but having the space so that I NEVER EVER hear the same phrasing twice out of an npc's mouth would be fantastic. If Sony and Microsoft can POUR money into franchises, Killzone 2 is $20 million plus with 120 staff I believe, or the money spent on Halo's marketing campaign ( Big $$$ I bet), I'm sure that money could be one day used to create a game worthy of 100 GB or 200 GB or More! Hey, my Wheel of Time dream game would require a disc with that much space.... there is NOTHING wrong with pushing technology to the extreme. In the next decade when I'm trippin ballz playing games in REAL 3D, I'm going to appreciate the push for tech. .

Anyone has an idea what the price of these disks could be like? I'm considering a blu-ray recorder...
