hmmm either u doing something wrong while setting it up or u got the wrong cables.

also most games dont support 1080i so u might have to force it to work, by only checking the 1080i box in the set up menu.

oh and your tv might be big but tvs that cant even support 720p suck, so u might wanna invest in a better one when u can

Dude the standard cable that comes with the PS3 is for standard definition TV's. You need a HDMI cable that will output your video to 720p or 1080i to your TV. If you're using the regular video cable that comes with the PS3 you won't be playing in HD, it'll be playing in the standard 480 mode or it may up-convert it to your TVwhich will make you think it's running in 1080i but in actuality it isn't. You need to get a high def cable, those cables are standard def for 480i tv's, which is the regular crappy signal on standard def TV's.

Theres no reason if they were the proper cables, and your tv in fact functions properly, that they wouldnt be displaying in 1080i. Something in what your telling us doesnt work out. Either your doing something wrong or.... your doing something wrong.

Try the DVI cable and see if that fixes it, but I cant figure why the component cables wouldnt be working.

There has always been a problem with the ps3 and 1080i only televisions. You might get a 1080i picture with blu ray movies, over your component cables, but your games generally run at 720p, which your tv does not support, so the ps3 scales them down to 480p. This is the ps3's fault. There is absolutly nothing you can do about it except buy a new television, or stick with a 360 for HD games on that tv ( the 360 has no problem doing 1080i over component. )

Your in luck! Go here. Its for everyone and anyone with Older HDTV that supports only 480i/480p and 1080i (no 720p) this should help you alot. they also have a list of supported 1080i/p games, so you'll know what to buy instead of 720p only games http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=1543693&view=by_date_ascending&page=1

if it was just downscaling when game starts i would understand and it would be sony's foult for not making it upscale games

but i am having problem as soon i start up ps3 in menu it wont dispaly any resolution higher thne NTSC ..

It's gotta be the cables, he should give more detail on what those particular cables are that he's using. That's the only way to really determine what the issue could be. Cuz if it's not the cable it's the TV.

You can actually use the PS3 component cable you already have to output the audio to the TV. I don't believe the HDMI to DVI cable will supply audio since it's converting it to DVI (now if you were using just a regular HDMI cable then the audio would be outputed through the same cable. Other than that all you need to get is the HDMI cable to DVI if that's the only cable your TV supports. I'm assuming you don't have a HDMI port on the back of your TV, if you need the hdmi to dvi?

Lastly, you'll need to go into the PS3's "sound settings" and make sure you go to "audio output settings" and change it to whatever the diagram on the TV shows that matches your setup. So basically you'll be using two cables for the audio and video.
