Which is your preferred setting, and why?

I know they're basically the same, but I've heard that 720p is better for gaming. Is this true?

Progressive Scan

I've got an HDTV that supports native 720p and can go up to 1080i; and it's painful when just looking at the difference.

Ever wonder why your PS3 always chooise 720p instead of 1080i when you play some games that can support both of these resolutions?

1080i sounds good in theory, but when you take into account the interlacing, well it doesn't really compare. Not to mention that on anything smaller than a 40" you wont notice the difference between 1080p and 720p, unless you like sitting two feet away from the TV.

I spent so long choosing the right television to play my PS3 on. I finally got the LG 32LB4D 32" 120 Hz 720p LCD. I noticed 1080i, 1080p and 720p. I'm going to be honest, you're going to spend about maybe 100-200 dollars extra for 1080i, which is uneccessary. Native resolution is the best, on the other hand 1080i, looks slightly different. For gaming, go for 720p. It's overall smoother, richer and clearer. It also depends on what size TV you want to get. In the end, it's virtually impossible to tell the difference between many resolutions but if you're a TV maniac like me, you'd care too :).

About a yr ago I bought me a Panasonic 42" Plasma that puts out 720p, and 1080i but no 1080p.

back then I didn't think much of it but now I know the preferred is 1080p, anyway I currently have my TV set at 1080i. I did alot of research and everyone I spoke to about 1080i vs 1080p told me that unless i have a 46' TV or bigger the difference between the 2 is unnoticeable. Never have I heard that 720p is better then 1080i until I joined the Gamespot forums. My thing is why would 1080i be an upgrade or a newer/later resolution then 720p if its not better? I'm not saying its not true, but that's what keeps me sceptical. Can someone pleas clear this up for me? I already know that progressive is better then interlaced but 1080 is still a higher rate the 720. Some one told me that 720p is better then 1080i because 1080 interlaced is 1080 lines and 720 progressive is 720 lines doubled so its really like 1440 lines, is this true? is 1080i complete crap?

Most games that support anything higher than 720p render to a 540p framebuffer when you use 1080i or 1080p. The only TRUE 1080p you'll ever get is from blu-ray movies, and anything but the most simple graphics games like tennis, basketball, only then is a 1920x1080 framebuffer used. Basically, when you are playing a game that supports 1080i, play at 720p. You're actually seeing more.

The best choice is to go with 1080i for the XMB and movies, and then go with the 720p for games. Both my HDTVs have 1080p so I'm good.

It all depends on what you are playing or watching. Ok so say you are watching a comedy or a slow movie go 1080i. Now say the movie is over and you watch The matrix or play some intense racing game go with 720p. To let you know my 360 is set to 720P.
