1080i is better for TV/movies and 720p is better for games.

720p for fast paced movies (action movies) and games. 1080i for slow paced movies (drama movies) and slow games. In general, you want to use 720p for both though IMO. 1080p is the best overall of course, but then I'd go 720p.

I never use 1080i anymore and found that so far everything seems to look and play better at 720p or below on older DVD's.

I have a question.

MLB '08: The Show apparently supports 1080p. I have a 1080p tv, yet it always automatically goes to 720p and I can't get it to go to 1080p. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I found that there's no difference at all between 720p and 1080p until you get to bigger screen sizes anyway. I've got a 1080p Bravia 48" and my mum has the same TV but only 32" and I can't pick the difference on hers when I play something at 720p compared to 1080 whereas on mine I just about can.

So, I think, 1080p is best but only really a vital thing if you have a screen that makes it worth the extra cash.

720p Trust me. I've done the research. I wouldn't shell out 2G's of my hard earned per diem without looking into it first. I am the proud owner of a 50' Samsung plasma screen and after reading various magazines, pamphlets, and web pages. As well as spending hours in front of various screen sizes, brands, and types. It is impossible to detect a difference in pixel rate unless the tv is larger than 50 inches. Unless of course you are sitting way too close. Not to mention 720p works much better with games with a high frame rate.
