depends on your output. A lot of games run on 720p

Blu-ray movies run at 1080p and 1080i

1080p won't look much better than 720p/1080i unless the screen is larger than 50 inches. Even then, it's basically up to your preferences. If you see a $1,000 difference in picture quality between a 720p screen and a 1080p screen, then go for it. I honestly think it's a waste of money at this point since prices are dropping so rapidly.

I'm pretty new on the PS3 front as well. I am curious can you force the PS3 to a 1080p output with scaling? I prefer 1080p scaled over 720p native (don't need the arguements - it's my preference). So I'm wondering if a game is 720p native can you set the console to scale it to 1080p (like it does for PS1 and 2 games)?

I have a 1080p TV and like I said I think (judging from the 360) that 720p scaled to 1080p looks better on it than 720p native does.

Thanks for the help guys.

If ps3 make good use of the 1080p then im willing to pay for it... the question is how much 1080p does the ps3 use?

A lot. 1080p looks awesome on the games and videos that support it. I notice a difference between them on a 42". Don't listen to the "you'll only notice it on an XX inch TV". There is definitely a difference, its just not a big enough difference to get that excited over. 720p will do you just fine for now, but if you want to future proof, go for 1080p.

I agree - I have a 37" 1080p TV and there is a very noticeable difference to me over 720p. Size doesn't matter - 1080p looks better period, at any size. It's just a matter of how much better it looks versus cost. If you're looking for the absolute best image though - then it will always be 1080p over 720p (as far as resolution goes, there's also picture quality to take into account).

i have a 42' samsung 1080i plasma and it rocks! i play games on it all the time and no burn-ins. don't listen to the people that say plasma burn in that and burn in this because if you buy a plasma that is teh year 06 or higher, less than 1 percent will experience burn-ins because plasma televisions changed a lot and they have a lot of anti-burnin technology on them and plus they last as long as lcd's now. and plasmas have better picture quality, color vibrant, more contrast ratios, deeper blacks than lcd's. plus lcd's are bad for gaming because they get motion blur meaning if you have high sensitivity on resistance fall of man or other fast paced games, you will be blurred out and can't see much.

most games are going to display in 720p so it's all good. but if you want a 1080p tv for like watching movies and stuff, sure go ahead.

go for the 1080p.some games do 1080p. and all blue ray movies will do 1080p. and when u seen mgs4 and kl im sure they were 1080 p. even if most games only do 720p and 1080 i at least ull have the option to do 1080p.

seen a few 1080 p sets on newegg for about 1000-1300. u can get a really nice one for just over them prices

Yea I saw some great 32" LCDs on www.frys.com, , Samsung LN-T3253H for $850, Toshiba 32HL67 for $750, and the Sharp LC32D43U for $770. Those three are all 720p but there is a sharp's 1080p LC32GP1U for $1099 and Sharp's LC32D62U for $977. Its about $2000 more for 1080p capabilities. I'm thinking that in the future 1080p is going to gain momentum, and since LCD's seems to have great reliability, you won't be replacing one so soon. Might as well put in some extra cash and put in the 1080p.

no. it will look great with the ps3 games.but not as good as if ur tv was 1080p.

think of it this way. say ur useing the old a.v cables thats 1080i . if u wanted better pic and sound u would use the old s video cable that would be 1080p.

i think its a little more difference then those but thats just a easy example to use

Would anyone suggest putting in another $200 or so to upgrade to a 1080p 32", probably going to be Sharp brand LC32D62U for $977 or LC32GP1U for $1099. There is a cheaper Sharp LC32D43U for $770, but will you notice that much of a difference on that size tv?

For expensive purchases like this you should always think about the future. 1080p is what you call "true HD" everything else is just HD resolution. More TV channels and games will be shown in true HD. I really think you should spend the extra to get the full experience. It is worth it.

I was thinking along the same lines, Like 1080p is going to gain momentum, and since LCD's seem to have good reliability, I probably won't be spending money on buying another TV anytime soon. Might as well get the best I can get now. Thanks for the input.

I had a 32 inch 720P TV but just bought a new 40 inch 1080P Samsung last week and the tv is great. Like some said the jump isn't gonna be a huge one like it is from standard def to high def but it is a little better. I got a real good deal on mine so i had to get it.
