i finally bought me a ps3 with 120 gb hdd

but somehow

when playing mgs4 it showed me 91gb free hdd space

which cant be - i only have mgs installed 4000mb and the heavy rain demo + some save games (so lets round it up to 2000mb)

so 4000mb + 2000 mb = 6000mb (6gb)

math first class i would have to have 114gb free hdd space

yet somehow i dont

whats up with that?

I think that the Gbs you lost were used for all the programs/apps in your PS3..like Home,Avatars, etc. This happens all the time...the Gb shown are never the really capacity you have...Check you MP3s...it's also the case

Yeah the OS can take up quite a bit of space.

Yeah when I first got my PS3 before I had loaded/saved anything onto it I only had 111 free GBs of memory. The operating system I'm guessing takes up around 9 gigs of HDD.

Just because the HDD is 120 GB doesn't mean that you can actually store 120 GB worth of data on it. I'm pretty sure there's a little footnote somewhere that says something along the lines of "formatted space will be less" or something like that. I'm too lazy to actually look it up, but that's just the way technology works.

i see

i still find it strange tho even if the OS takes about 9gb

120- 9 = 111

111- 6 = 105 not 91 ^^

and i didnt dl any avatars or such its still as it came right from the sony works ^^

well

thx 4 ur answers anyway

i find the ps3 menus somewhat odd

the hdd isnt listed to view the total amount of used space like on the 360 etc.

its nice that u can surf thru the normal internet tho

psn is a bit confusing since its not ordered in types demo or dlc

and it seems that demos are very rare

but so far im happy with that thing ^^

Storage can been seen when you go to your XMB > System Settings > System Information.

As for hard-drive space - don't worry about it, it's perfectly normal. All current and past hard-drives take certain percentage of HDD space reserved.

I have 320 GB HDD and I has 290 free when I installed it. It's just the way hard-drives work. ;)

The Playstation System takes up "X "ammount of GB,you get that with all consoles usually fitted with a hard drive.

You'll never get the full advertised space because of other stuff on the drive that needs to be there (kinda beyond your control). I know exactly what you're saying though about the demos and the overall design of the Playstation Store..it's horrible! And the menus are indeed very very odd - I'm sure I'll enjoy my 120gb ps3 once Heavy Rain comes out and probably God of War 3
