So, a lot of potential PS3 buyers have been waiting for a price cut, or at least some kind of great bundle offer for the holiday season. Meanwhile M$ packages a barebones 360 (which the average consumer won't know) at $200. What does Sony do..... introduce a new SKU, for a whopping $500. Most people will have a tough time filling 80gb, let alone 160gb. This isnt really a selling point. Meanwhile Uncharted, while a great game, is no system seller and is a year old to boot. It doesnt offer PS2 BC like the MGS4 bundle did either.

Average person is debating between a PS3 and a 360. Sees a 360 for $300 less!! Of course theyre gonna pass. Honestly, wtf was Sony thinking?!?!?!

They should release a gimped PS3. With a 20gb HDD, sixaxis controller and no wifi support at $300. Throw in a free blu ray movie. This would sell.

the 160gb bundle is a really bad deal

They think that people will fill 80gb PS3's easily because of the media it can store plus all the game downloads. I think it's a good choice. It's absolutely true that the price is extremely steep compared to a $200 system that average consumers see do the same exact thing. It would definitely be worth it though if it had backwards compatibility. That's why I'm happy with my 80gig :)

i dunno why they do it either, i can easily upgrade my 40gb ps3 to a 250gb so they should concentrate more on the sales than bringin out a new SKU, i dont get what they doin, they no perfectly well that you can upgrade your hard drive so this dont make no scence in wat they are doing !

Almost everybody who bought a 20/40/60 gigs ps3 replaced their HDD with a bigger one, that's why son made a ps3 with a bigger hdd, also because they realized that 80 gigs won't be enough when all the media stuff will be coming out like downloadable movies on demand and all.

Damn right. There's a movie bundle for europe, it's an 80 gb PS3 with 300 movie and one dualshock 3 controller for 440 dlls, but, as you've said, they should had putted a sixaxis and 40gb HDD at most. If they were using that bundle to promote the ps3 as a blu ray player why the hell did they include a dualshock 3 beats me

If anythink they should of made the 169gig BC that would justify the price, but 500 dollers for a memery upgrade is crazy, but hey its what they thik will sell.

The reason why Sony added the bigger hard was for those who are afraid of upgrading their hard drives for fear of not knowing what they are doing. Sony took out BC to make the PS3 cheaper and to sell ps3 games.

IMO, i think that a "gimped" PS3, With a 20gb HDD, sixaxis controller and no wifi support at $300. Throw in a free blu ray movie, would not sell at all. 20 gbs would probably be used up in about 2 weeks and 5 games. the sixaxis was a terrible controller that just weighted like nothing and didn't even have rumble. Taking away wi-fi would turn a lot of customers away, because its one of the main selling points that PS has over 360, so that would be a terrible idea. And i'm pretty sure a free blu-ray isn't going to get people all running to the store to pick up the "gimped" 20 gb. Also, i think that the 160 was a great deal, compared to the MGS4 bundle, which had BC, which you don't really need anyways...why would you go play backwards? You pay the SAME price for twice the memory. Now that a deal.

well it doesn't make sense to sell the ps3 with a 20Gb hard-drive or 40Gb or 60gb for that matter, because production of those particular size laptop hard drives have ceased, and to produce them would actually be more costly than getting the 80gb harddrive, which is why the 20, 40 and 60 were all abandoned. I do believe that the lack of a price cut before christmas was the wrong move, but maybe with the whole financial situation sony could not afford to do it now and they are just hoping that all their top tier games released recently will push people to buy the system or atleast buy the software, where they actually make money. Hopefully they will drop the price around feb 27th to sell some systems. There's that rumour from the internal sony event about a march price drop. I'm sure if sony could have afforded a price drop now they would have.

I am still trying to figure out why Sony keeps making all of these different versions of their console.I thought the whole point of Getting rid of the 20/60/original 80 gig was because of cost to make the extra features and keep B/C.But doesn't it cost more to make a brand new console ever few months?

Well, adding the extra 80GBs would justify the pricing being so high to some people.

I got the 40gb and filled it up within 6 months. I got something like 3gb left I need to upgrade the HDD. I think people dont realize once you get TVersity your PS3 becomes your new computer w/ movies, music and media.

I bought a 40GB PS3, swapped out the internal harddrive with a spare laptop 120GB I had (a good Samsung brand), and voila! I now have a 120GB PS3 with the 40GB's incredible cooling system and quiet fans.

Yep, pretty much. I have a Wii alrready and I need another console: PS3 or 360. I thought of which one to get over a week or so, and decided XBOX 360. Why? The price. I'm not paying $700 (price in Australia) for a PS3 which has less games that I want. The decision was easy for me. If the PS3 cost $399 like 360s in Australia I might've chosen it.

20gig with all the features of a 40gig (No BC,2usb ports, no flash drives) for 300 sounds like a very good Idea

Yeah maybe a cheaper 20gb console would be nice for business, to be competitive like the arcade 360. But as everyone said, 20gb would fill up fast.

That doesn't make the 160gb one bad.

The biggest mistake was to stop making PS2 backwards compatibility....

So what can you do with the card? if you use it do you get money to use in the PS store? Do you apply online and have to buy the PS3 online? For $250 and bonuses like that I think I could use another PS3.

They couldn't cut price obviously , and this looks like a financial decision. They were likely able to get much better margains at retail on each sku sold over the 80 by giving away one of their games. And at the same time they give the people who do buy it the room to buy their online junk later. The 160 bundles will likely be limited and gone by early next year.

I wouldn't worry too much about this system wars stuff and they'll drop price as as they can do it. A gimped product would probably lose them more money.

Eventually, everyone is going to need a bluray player when the DVD's are faced out. For that simply fact the PS3 justifies its price. 8)

Because Sony wants to sell the 80GB(core PS3) and 160GB(Uncharted bundle) to those who want to only play PS3 games. I don't think it costs them more money since they took out BC and only have two usb ports instead of four usb ports.
