17 million PS3s sold

world wide sells are 16.84 million. 2.43 million PS3s sold during the 2nd quarter.

The PS3 isn't selling as well as the PS2 was in it's first 2 years. The PS2 sold roughly 8 million more at the same point in it's lifespan. But when you consider that the PS3 is much more expensive and actually has real worthwhile competition, 17 million is very good. And it's actually selling a lot more than the PS1 did at the same point in it's life and the PS1 reached 102 million sold.

really? i'm sure i read somewhere it was 16 mill each, but i guess not. I can't find any proper info on its second year sales anywhere, the internet is weak, i can't believe noones done a proper comparison.

Edit: Yeah i was wrong by about 20 mill units, the ps2 sold 40 million by its second year. It's still selling well though, on another note in 2003 the ps2 racked up sales of 10 million in 4 months so if the ps3 can do that next year, it may just get on track to beating the ps2. Not that it matters the game industry is thriving and as long as it continues to grow, gaming can only improve, as more money will be put in to the industry.

Doesn't really matter compared to the other consoles, just good to hear it has sold alot :D.

Only 3 million behind the 360, not bad considering it was out a year later........and it's more expensive.

Who knows maybe Sony can actually pull something off this gen;)

Most likely. Lots of people i know are planning to buy a PS3 on holidays, last year they didn't because there were no appealing exclusives, except for Uncharted but i never heard of the game until i got a PS3, terrible publishing for such a nice game
