wait, if you could get a 1TB laptop HDD why not just put it inside the PS# instead of using it like an external?

Yeah you can, you can get adapters for your PS2 so that you can use a 3.5'' drive. Don't remember seeing any 2.5'' 1TB drives.

actually u don't need a lap to dive, all u need is an external enclousure with a Sata out and its own power supply, then connect that to the ps3 Sata connector where the original hard drive is. but that might void the warranty Easiest way to not damage the connector inside the ps3 is to use the Xecuter PS3 HDXT, but you dont need a 1 TB drive unless u intend to download and keep every demo out there, purchase movies and tv shows and have like 100 full games installed. A 320gb 2.5" should be enough

This post pretty much sums it all up... it's possible (good idea by the way, kb -- I didn't even think of that), but why would you want to? You can go out and get a 500gb hard drive and still have more space than you're ever likely to use. I haven't even filled up my 60gb and I've got a bunch of games installed, and a ton of add-on content.

The only reason I'm even considering upgrading the HDD is because Sony made a complete abortion out of the streaming. It always disconnects from the media server, there's several seconds of waiting in between each streamed audio track, and in-game soundtracks don't support streaming audio, even though 360 had that feature a few years before Sony even thought of turning it into a standard option. Sometimes I think Sony would F up a free lunch.

Mac user= Medallink by Nullriver. Costs $20 but is the best media streaming program ever for the ps3, including on-the-fly updating hen new files are put in, and full integration with itunes, iphoto and media folders.

Pc user= Tversity, free for windows, not as great, but is a solid media server for PS3.

Only use those 2 programs.

Not a 2.5 SATA drive, but you can use an external drive that needs to be formatted in FAT32. FAT32 can be supported up to 2TB and PS3 should recognize that. The only problem is that if you use Windows XP or Vista to format the drive, it will limit you to only format it at 32GB (Thanks M$). So you would need another disk management program to make it happen.

If you put in a 2.5 hdd into the PS3 it will format over, you only need to FAT format it if you want to use it as an external hdd, and the max right now for space is 500GB. Makes you realize if they still had the PS3 as a media server option, that would have been really good.

You need 2.5 in SATA HDD, I would not risk putting someting this huge into your PS3. Just buy an external HDD...

Yeah i wouldnt suggest going that route either b/c i have a 500G external hooked up to my ps3 and b/c the ps3 only detects drives in FAT32, i had to partition the drive and the ps3 only sees 191 gigs :(

WRONG!!! 1TB is 1024 GB lol yea I know...

Actually, not in storage; storage manufacturers use multiples of 1,000, not 1,024. And they do make 1 TB laptop drives; however the only current ones I've seen are non-standard in size and won't fit in the PS3's drive bay.

It depends on who you ask, really. Every HDD company uses the 1=1000 ratio, for obvious reasons. OS reports 1=1024. Which is why it always seems you are getting cheated when you see what Windows reports compared to what is labeled on a HDD box.

Which brings us to those that are complaining that the PS3 seeing less than the box states... I suspect the same conversion difference is to blame.

Yes a 1TB sata hard drive will work in a ps3. People think its nuts but you do run in to some issues while downloading content and saving music and videos onto your console. A 1TB drive should yield you about 960 gb after the formating and converting to fat32 so that the system will recognize it. You may need to put some spacers in under the heat sink in order to allow for the extra clearance seeing as how the oem hard drive is about 9.5mm and the 1tb is almost 3mm larger in hight. Other than that you are in the clear and ready to roll. Its really not that hard to do. I hope this helps all that are looking to have one of the biggest PS3's around. ENJOY

yeah 1000MB is 1GB, 1000kb = 1MB, and 1kb = 1000 bytes...

so basically you only get approximate 90% of 1024GB (1TB) when you purchase a 1TB hdd.

True, but unfortunately for marketing purposes a 1TB HDD effectively equals 1000GB. It is so misleading and makes me angry. Rarw! This is why so many people think they have been ripped off when their new HDD is not properly reporting free space.

I once heard the highest hard drive you could put into a PS3 is 500gb, but I've just installed a 640gb in my slimline. What I would do is buy the 1tb try it, and if it fail's send it back.

Absolutely, but why? When you approach that mark you might as well pick up a cheap NAS or put together a home server so you can share those files with any computer or device in your home. And formatting a 1TB drive in FAT32 is just a painful concept.

You got a link to back this up? I don't think it's ever been confirmed. I know that 640GB HDDs work as others have stated.

I have a2Tb ext. HDD on my PS3, so yes it's possible. 1TB is different defined depending on how you look at it. For electronic devices, 1 TB is 1024 GB, but for HDD manufactors 1TB is 1000 GB

damn, just realised it's a zombie thread. Why do people pumb threads that are 2 years old oO WTF

I've seen a1tb 2.5" hdd, but I think it's slightly thicker than a 750gb and less. I've heard that it won't fit.
