I don't like Japanese happy go lucky games or their animation style . If I play RPG's I like them to be dark like Fallout, or Demon Souls.

1) Neptune looks cool. I want it!
2) I have not played the other Agarest game and I probably never will so I dunno...
3) Isn't Rune Factory on Wii a bit like a mix between Harvest Moon and some casual fighting?

It's more like Harvest Moon with light dungeon crawler elements.

Agreed :( From those I'm looking forward to Neptune (apparently called Neptunia for the English release). I was hoping it would get localized so I'm excited to get to play it. Never played Record of Agarest War since I don't really like SRPGs so I'm not sure about the new game. And I don't even know what Rune Factory is so I don't know about that one either.

Yeah pretty much. The combat itself is on the light side, but the micro-management and time constaints are heavy.

I have played a few Final Fanasty's I've enjoyed though. FFXII mainly, I like the open world, and the characters weren't incredibly annoying like in FFXIII.

I won't touch anything Japanese without the Final Fantasy label. Im atleast inclined to try them.

As someone who loves the old PSX JRPGs and has been starved for a good one for quite some time (as we all have), I have to say, those look freakin' terrible. That's a shame that JRPGs are now being associated with a bunch of anime girls plastered everywhere... Xenogears pulled it off, but it wasn't using that as a selling point.

If it wasn't for Xenogears, why is it for these games? Sounds like your trying to act like you know something about these games when you evidently don't. Maybe you would find more good JRPGs if you actually tried them without making baseless assumptions.

Indeed, while I like me some jrpgs, can't say any of those get my super excited. Will be fun to see how Neptune turns out, but it's not exactly a game to hold ones breath over. Especially when you consider the Tales games are probably better yet struggle for english releases. Quirkiest jrpg I'm looking forward to at the moment is Catherine, the rest kinda fall into the 'see how it goes' category.

I'm surprised a game like Neptune is going to the USA. Then again, if a game like Record of Agarest War made it stateside, anything can. I've heard of the first two but never heard of Rune Factory. Record of Agrest Wars Zero is definitely on my must buy list. Who is publishing and localizing these games?

Oh yeah, that's a great argument... Xenogears is associated with anime because of the art obviously, but also because of an almost overly elaborate plotline as well. And looking at the artwork, it's obvious that they aren't trying to shove cliche, might-as-well-be-naked anime girls down your throat to sell their game.

Let's take a look at these covers:

Now let's look at one of the games in question:

Right...So we have half naked anime girls plastered all over the cover and one chick whose boobs are basically hanging right over the logo.

Now why would they do something like that? Gee, I wonder.

That's not an assumption, that's just another way for them to market their game. And if their game is so depthless that they feel the most discernible quality of their game is that cliche, half-naked anime chick, then the assumption that the game will be bad doesn't seem so stupid.

Besides that, what exactly are you trying to say? That there are good JRPGs out there that I'm too close minded to discover? Not the case at all. It's pretty much a given that JRPGs have been dying out since next-gen. And other than Lost Odyssey and Valkyria Chronicles, there haven't been any good next-gen JRPGs around.

Really? I assumed it was given, well, last I heard, everyone thought so? Isn't it being developed by the people behind the Persona games? Heck the main dude appeared in P3P. And it's not like there's been any gameplay footage anyway, has there? And that's not taking into account some people consider games like NieR, Demon's Souls, Kingdom Hearts to be jrpgs anyway. I kinda hate the term, so they're all just generally rpg to me. Or are you saying Catherine is more like Uncharted?

Well obviously cause its still current gen :P But if you're looking for a good JRPG why not try Persona 3 and 4? Considering when they were released you could make the case it counts as this gen, even though they were released on last gen hardware.

There's a difference between action/adventure and action RPGs. Demon's Soul's and Kingdom Hearts fit the action RPG genre. A game like say Zelda or Assassin's Creed would be an action adventure. I don't really know too much about the gameplay for Catherine, but from what I can gather its not going to be an RPG like Yangire said. And just because its done by the Persona team doesn't automatically mean it will be one either.

Played them, and I like them. I'm not in love with them, but they're very good games. By next-gen I just meant 7th generation console games. PS2 has some great JRPGs. Problem is they're a lot harder to make for next-gen systems so the quantity has dipped considerably.

I do get the difference, I just still assumed it was gonna be an rpg. Must say I haven't been following up on much gaming news for a while, but anyway, that sorta makes me less excited for it. Oh well, here's hoping to a fun action adventure game then.

Yeah, there are simply not any JRPGs around. Which is a shame. I have to play the old games mostly if I want an RPG fix. There's always looking forward to Versus 13, but I almost feel like I'm setting myself up for a fall with that game.

I've lost hope in JRPGs. This gen, all JRPGs have sucked. Final Fantasy 13 takes the cake for the worst. I just don't understnd what it is that goes through their head when they design their characters, for example Vanille, WTF? They lost their magic touch, Western RPGs have taken over. Why can't they go back to originl stories with more appealing characters instead of the cliche Save the World theme with guys who look exactly like the girls. Why can't they go back to real heroic characters instead of the try-hard-2-look-cool and the sissy (Hope) personas?

I'm not even bothering to get hyped for Versus anymore. The game has taken so long to develop I just lost interest. I'm sure when more info comes out and it starts getting close to release I'll get really hyped for it, but for now I'm not too excited for it. I loved FFXIII but I don't think its as good as some of the PS1 and PS2 RPGs. I enjoyed SO4 too, but it was nothing amazing. It really seems like the scale is starting to tip towards WRPGs. At least here it is.

DevilishStyles

Yeah, there are simply not any JRPGs around. Which is a shame. I have to play the old games mostly if I want an RPG fix. There's always looking forward to Versus 13, but I almost feel like I'm setting myself up for a fall with that game.

That does seem to be the case. I love Mass Effect, Oblivion as well as Dragon Age, but none of them really have the same impact as some of the classic JRPGs. The market for them has just dipped to hell and developers are probably afraid to tackle something like that. Realistically a game with as much content as a FFVII for instance would take way too long to create. There are just too many details for them to touch upon.

Lost Odyssey was a bore. I fell asleep multiple times while playing that game.

Well obviously cause its still current gen :P But if you're looking for a good JRPG why not try Persona 3 and 4? Considering when they were released you could make the case it counts as this gen, even though they were released on last gen hardware.

Texas2089

Played them, and I like them. I'm not in love with them, but they're very good games. By next-gen I just meant 7th generation console games. PS2 has some great JRPGs. Problem is they're a lot harder to make for next-gen systems so the quantity has dipped considerably.

Those are the 2 best JRPG's I've played over the last 2-3 years so I'm not sure of any others you could try.

Have you guys played Tales of Vesperia? That was a good jrpg fix. Granted it's not on the ps3, but then again neither is LO. I recently played P3P, and while it was nice, I can't say I was enthralled by it. P4 is supposedly better, hopefully I'll get to try it someday. Personnaly though I quite enjoyed FFXIII, so I'm not exactly in a rut for jrpgs (then again that was more than 6 months ago...)

And if either you guys, or anyone else who enjoys jrpgs haven't tried NieR, I'd recommend it. It's a niche title, so it's gonna be hit and miss, but you'll never know unless you try. Also it's an action rpg, so not technically in the vein of a jrpg, but still.
