I have a 60 gig and the multi media card readers are very nice when needed. And they can also read data off the PSP memory card if you heeded to use this method at some time in the future, like say there is a conflict between the PS3 and PSP remote play and you have something on the memory card that you want to save on your PS3. Also there are several other things they can be used for (I have a Sony camara that uses memory cards that also can be used in the card reader). Even some of my PC's have the extra card readers now.
Also if you have some PS1 games you enjoy then there may even be some PS2 games you may want to play on the system at a later date, even if you have a PS2 at this time it could fail one day and the 40 gig isn't supporting the PS2 games while the 20, 60, and 80 gig do support PS2 games. Just something to think about in the future.
I have a 40GB and still have my PS2 (which I haven't used since I got my ps3).
1. Have not experienced any freezing issues or other problems at all, runs perfectly.
2. It does play ps1 games and you can use your ps1 memory cards, but as with any ps3 you need to buy an accessory to that plugs into a usb port to use a memory card (or you can just save on the hdd).
3. As for the disadvantage of the memory card reader, it is kind of a personal thing (I doubt i would ever use it even if i had it) but you can still get your pictures and things on the HDD.
4. One other note is the limited USB ports, 2 instead of 4. It really is not a big deal unless you plan on getting Rock Band, or using an external HDD or the PSeye (and even then you probably will only really miss it in rock band).
