are the tradeoffs of the 40 GB worth it.

and im talking about mainly the USB ports (2 compared to 4) and no backwards compatibility.

USBs don't really matter. But the BC does. Do you own a lot of PS2 game? Or do you want to play them because you missed out? If it's yes, then you should get 80 gig one.

I have a 40GB PS3, and i love it.

The main differences I see are that there are 2 USB ports, no media card compartment, and no backwards compatibility.

-The 2 USB ports are fine if you only plan on using the controllers. But if you want to setup a mouse and keyboard interface, 6 is better. No need to worry about using a USB slot for a headset, since the PS3 has bluetooth.

-I have a PS2, so the lack of backwards compatibility really doesn't matter to me (graphics are comparable on either systems for PS2 games)

-And the lack of the media card compartment is no hassle, seeing as how you can put any files (pics, movies, etc..) from an SD card onto your computer, then onto a USB flash drive for quick transfers.

Umm you probably wont ever need more than 2 usbs cuz the controller batteries last pretty long, if you choose to play a game like guitar hero and buy eyetoy and rockband you can always get a usb hub and they are all compatible... Backwards compatibility sucks for the ps3 anyways the price difference is about 100 dollars so you can literally pick up a ps2 later if you feel like you must play ps2 games...

you have to decide whether the trade-offs are worth it for yourself

The main thing thats bad about it is the lack of Backwards Compatibility, which would hurt me personally because I have a ton of PS2 games. Fortunately, i have a 60gb model. If you dont care about last gen games, 40gb is right up your alley. Its designed more for the Consumer who wants to leave last gen behind and jump in (heh) to the current gen.

I have a 40gb model and i'm more than happy with it. I own a PS2, so I don't really care much for backward compatibility anyway and the other things that are gone don't affect me. The size of the hard drive might be of concern if you want to load up your system with music, pictures and downloable games but..still, you're given quite a bit to work with there.

Out of your choices for games to get, i'd go with Call of Duty 4. The single player portion of the game is great fun and the multiplayer is both rewarding and addicting.
