Yeah, we all know that, but that's not my main question. A friend of mine, or rather, a teacher of mine (Chemistry, and yes, it does seem wierd sometimes) bought a Ps3. Part of the reason for his purchase was to be able to play some of his old PlayStation 2 games. When he bought a 40 Gig at GameStop, the clerk negelected to tell him this wouldn't be possible.

I figured I'd ask for him, but is there any special update that would add the emulator? OR has he just been screwed over completely? He's had it for about a month or two.

yep. screwed. It's surprising the amount of people who don't do basic research on pricy items.

Return it. If he has the reciept, get him to tell the clerk it's been glitchy, and that he wants his $$$ back. It's not a very decent thing to do, I wouldn't do something like that, but it's the only thing I can think of to get his cash back. Especially after a couple months :S

He's out of luck because not only is the software not in the 40 gig PS3 but the hardware isn't there as well. He should take it back and ask for a manager and tell the manager what he was told about the console he bought. If this doesn't work then he could call the customer service about what happened. This may get some results for him.

I think it owuld be possible to play PS2 games on the 40GB if Sony really wanted to, but it would cost some $$$, as the graphics chip isn't there. Only solutions Sony could do is make an external graphics chip, or mabye a download of some sort. I don't think either one will happen though. They are washing their hands of the PS2 now it seems.

It says it on the back of the box. No ps2 BC or something. Teachers are just people too.... no more smarter than you and I.

To have BC on the 40gb would require Sony to individually program each and every PS2 game specifically for it since there is no common hardware in the 40gb...it will not be getting BC, in any form, ever.

He can play ps1 games though. If he wants the best BC, get the 20GB or 60GB if he can still find it. Or get the 80GB which has pretty good BC already. Just not as good as the 20GB or 60GB model.

I have some ideas.

1. Use his ps2 to play ps2 games

2. Buy a ps2 and play ps2 games

Its better than buying the 80gb since its only like 75% bc. So i would throw down the $30 to play all ps2 games(which is what im gonna do as i have a 40gb and want to play dbz budokai and tenkaichi )

since he got the 40GB... just ask him to buy a ps2 for full BC.

Hes better off buying a ps2. Its cheaper to buy a 40 gig ps3 and a used ps2 then it is to buy an 80gig. On top of that I think the quality of ps2 games as played emulated on the 80 and 60 gig suck. Just same as how ps1 games look crappy on ps2.

Even though it does say on the back of the 40gb ps3 that it does NOT play ps2 games, if he takes it back, asks for a manager and explains that the clerk gave him misinformation and told him that it would, he may be able to get the clerk to let him exchange it for a 80gb by paying the difference.

BETTER TRADE IT FOR A 20 - 60 OR 80 GB!!!!!

DO ME A FAVOR AND PLAY PS3 GAMES!!! BESIDES BLU RAY MOVIES.

No emulation on 40 GB - I wouldn't assume they will build it in, they seem to be trying to abandon bc. For being a teacher, the dude should have known to ask first.

There is NO PS2 EMULATOR on the PSN site. There is a PS2 data download that patches some on-line games on the 20, 60, and maybe the 80 gig SKU's and nothing else.

Yeah, if he doesn't bother to return it, he's screwed. He'd better hold onto his PS2 if still wants to play those PS2 games.

As I understand it, it was a huge impulse decision for him. He said the reason he picked it over the 360 was because he knew it could play PlayStation 2 games (obviously not the one he bought) and his PS2 was on its last stretches of life. He figured that he might as well get a PS3 and upgrade while still being able to play old games.

It does look like he's been screwed though. I'll have to let him know Monday.

They'll do that as soon as PS2 stops selling so well. PS2 still sells ALOT. Why would sony just make it on the PS3? They don't want to make the PS2 obsolete yet.

That;'s my theory anyway.

So there's a fair while until we see it!

Actually i bought the 40 gig knowing i won't be needing backwards compatability, since i already have a PS2.

Besides the point, it tells you on the box regardless.

no chance for him to play ps2 games on a 40gig he is better off buyin a ps2 given that most stores are out of the 80gig, i suppose if he makes enough of a fuss about it he could return it and pay the difference but it has been a long time

Things like this is what makes all of us that bought the 60 gig system when it actually had the hardware and software that supports the PS2 games feel so much better now, even after spending $600.00 for the system.
