Most games would work in it either way for bc beside some few games which are probabley least played least popular which would be every few and will probabley be updated to work in the future anyways. There is no need for memory cards has none of the PS3s have them you can save your PS2games on the harddrive through memory card emulation which comes with the system and that includes PS1 memory card emulation also.

He's talking about the memory stick/duo/sd/mmc slots, not the PS2 memory cards.

Of course it will be backwards compatible! All of it is being done by emulation now. It would cost Sony no extra money to make the supposed 40 GB be backwards compatible. Making it unable to emulate software would not make any sense what-so-ever.
I don't think a 40 gig system would be out because the way things are the HDD would cost more than the 60 or 80 gig drives, this could be the reason the 20 gig was dropped. The smaller HDD would most likely have to be manufactured from a supplier that could charge more than normal for the smaller HDD. The larger HDD have gotten to be so dominate in the market place anymore.
As for BC compatability they are all about the same and with firmware updates it keeps getting better. Also I don't think they will remove the wifi or anything else because they have just now started using remote play with the PSP. And this will allow the PS3 owners that have a PSP connect to there PS3 remotely from any internet hot spot in the world via there PSP.
