Just wondering why the 40GB isnt backward compatible, surely it could be done easily by software emulation like the european PS3 through downloadable updates?

From what i have heard, it will not be bacjwards compatable, they have stripped down a few features on the 40gb unit. There are different sites that you can get this info.

Now it's linked.

Anyways, I think they may end up doing hardware emulation later on down the line. You can still purchase the 60 gig one and it's dropping in price.

They have put together alot of responses from many PS3-owners that don't request this function and that at thispoint exists more games for PS3 then it did when it was released.

And, in SCEE-area, they will only sell what is left on stock of the 60GB version, after that, the 40GB version is the only one that will be for sale.

Sony stopped manufactureing the 60 gig PS3 around the E3 time period and when all the 60 gig PS3's are gone (that had the EE chip) then they will be releaseing the 80 gig SKU that will be using software emulation for the PS2 games like many other areas have had all along. So if and when they release a 40 gig SKU I don't see it being any different than the former PS3 SKU's. Just a logical thought of what is happening with Sony.

Unfortunately, the 80gb still used a bit of PS2 hardware called the graphics synthesizer. For the 40gb in Europe, this too has been removed, so its probable that the new 40gb over here will not have BC either... at all.

If BC is important to you, buy a 60gb asap before they are out. They may announce another price drop for the 60gb when the 40gb is announced for USA...

Its rediculous that Sony would take out BC from the 40GB.Wouldnt it be more expensive to take already existing parts then to just leave it in? it seems like their trying to force people to get the most expensive one.

they did it to make it less costly. Its a smart move. But they should have just cut the price of the 80Gb instead.
