This may not be PROOF, but good reason to believe that the $399 40GB is coming (and maybe sooner than we thought).

http://www.gametrailers.com/viewnews.php?id=5126

Although their guess as to how Sony will cut costs on the model is pretty stupid.

"In order to offer a $399 PS3, Sky News reports that Sony will either remove the console's USB ports or backwards compatibility."

Maybe someone should tell them that the USB ports are used to charge the controllers.

Also the backwards compatibility is now done by software emulation which costs nothing.

Did it ever occur to them that it costs less because the hard drive is smaller???

They may have meant the card readers. Removing the USB ports is not possible.

Rumor: FoxConn To Produce 40GB PS3

Okay, so they didn't announce it at the Tokyo Game Show, but that hasn't stopped the rumor. In fact, it seems more possible than ever: according to Product-Reviews.net, it seems Sony has already approached Taiwanese manufacturer FoxConn and requested they make a "lower-spec" PS3. If you weren't aware, FoxConn is the same company that produces the PS2.

However, and this has been a subject of much debate over the past few weeks, nobody is really sure what "lower-spec" actually means. Some have said this might include the loss of a USB port or that great backwards compatibility...which basically already disappeared in the new 80GB model. It doesn't feature that snazzy graphics synthesizer chip from the 60GB model that results in almost full backwards compatibility (it uses software emulation instead), so it's very likely we'll see this same approach in the 40GB model.

Many have expected the US model would retail at $399 and the UK model at £200, but again, nothing has been officially confirmed. It seems almost inevitable this mystery 40GB PS3 will arrive at some point, but we have no idea why Sony didn't want to announce it at TGS. Perhaps they're just waiting for a more strategic time, closer to the holidays...?

Mass Purchased 80gb HDDs might actually be the same price as Mass Purchasesd 40gb HDDs. Don't know that for sure though.

FCC Filing Resurrects 40GB PS3 Rumor

Well, when a rumor gets going, it's like a runaway locomotive: it requires an insane amount of force to get it to stop, and any little push causes the thing to gain speed. The existence of a 40GB PS3, which SCEE has already debunked by calling the idea nothing more than "rumor and speculation," is back once again.

This time, according to Eurogamer, it's the good ol' FCC who has the most recent evidence in the palms of their bureaucratic hands. Sony has officially filed something new with the Federal Communications Commission; the code number is CECHG01. What makes it "new?" Well, it's different than the numbers for the 60GB (CECHA01) and the 80GB (CECH01) models, but at the same time, it's also very similar. With a difference of only one letter, shouldn't we expect this to be another PlayStation 3...?

Maybe. But Sony has refused to comment (surprise, surprise), so while the rumor has gained more steam, it's still just a rumor. All hardware must be checked by the FCC before it can be manufactured and sold in the US, so maybe Sony could hide whatever this is from us, but not from the federal government. Lastly, this most recent filing lists a subsidiary company of China-based AsusTek as the maker, who just so happens to be handling production of the current 80GB PS3. Yes, the plot thickens.

Sony has already said they have no intentions of dropping the price until they reinforce the system's software lineup, and if that's the case, wouldn't it make perfect sense to issue a cheaper model for the holidays? We think it does.

I am wondering where all the sony accesories are? When you look around, there isn't much for ps3 accessories compared to ps2.

Here is what is most likely going to happen.

40GB ps3 without EE and card reader. Maybe only 2 usb ports available. Bundle it with spiderman or bundle it with warhawk and selling it for $399.

Bundle the same 40GB ps3 with a PSP phat for $499.

Damn, you've got a christmas sellout.

Why would they keep the wifi? for the BR remote probably and the controllers.

They may even realease a wiisport-like game on ps3 bundle with a wiimote-like stick.

Retail Evidence For 40GB PS3 Pops Up

t's difficult to keep things secret when you have to take the appropriate business steps to launch a new product. First, we have a mysterious FCC filing from Sony, with a code number that's awfully similar to the other PS3 models. Then, we hear about that "Spider-Man 3" Blu-Ray bundle, which will feature a "lower-spec" 40GB PS3, and now, the mysterious PS3 is starting to pop up in retail databases.

According to multiple sources (Joystiq, Engadget, etc.), this lower-end PS3 model is already in official existence. Joystiq says they received a tip that a UPC database website has a listing for a "Sony PlayStation 3 40GB" and that's enough to get people excited. Whatever site that is, it doesn't seem to allow user-created data, and so far, all of their numbers we've checked have been correct. On top of this, Engadget claims to have a leaked Best Buy document that shows a similar listing for a 40GB PS3, with a retail price of $399. So far, you're looking at some of the best evidence of the much-rumored PS3 model, even though Sony hasn't said anything official.

What will be unveiled during their Big Bang conference? Well, it seems more than likely that the 40GB PS3, bundled with "Spider-Man 3" and boasting a $399 price tag, is definitely on the announcement agenda. We all know about it now, Sony, why wait until October 12? Just go ahead and tell us!

Those Analysts probly have never owned a console or have never touched a PS3 in their lives. All they do is following what other media is saying. So why care?

it is a joke though. just one example, One of my collegue is from Yale MBA program. And when one i asked him if he knows about E3, (and I did give him a hint it is about game industry) he poundered and replied, "no, becasue i have a girlfriend" .

And there are lots of analysts out there are exactly like him, knowing nth about E3 but still writes columns about it.
