[QUOTE="neo418"]

It's not going to increase the size of games just the graphic quality. That disc will be used for Ultra High Definition games and movies.

liamabob

that disc will not be used for ultra-high def games. the hardware will still have to have to be powerful enough to push those visuals out.

Well, the disc may be used with the PS4.

Interesting..

Though I highly doubt there will be any game taking advantage of that in the future. Would mean a lot of great things for the gaming of PS3.

FFIII on the SNES was $70 retail at release, before the days of used game sales. I'd gladly pay $150 for a game that effectively used that amount of space. Even at that price we're talking Neo Geo game, and a bad one at that.

It strikes me as bizarre that people think that a huge Blu-Ray would mean a huge install.

The install isn't something forced upon the developer by the disc, it's the developer using the fact that every PS3 has a hard drive to do an install so that loading times are reduced when playing the game. I noticed loading times on DMC4 were significantly lower than DMC3.

Every Xbox doesn't have a hard drive because they released a version without it to atract the consumers who couldn't afford the full priced model. So, not every Xbox has a HDD so a game that has an install is not possible, meaning longer loading times.

A huge Blu-Ray would be awesome for gaming, no more switching discs. And Kojima could finally be happy with the space afforded to him by the medium.

devs will never "forget" about the 360 this gen. it has a larger install base than the PS3, and if anything MORE games are going to 360. FFXIII ring a bell? more devs are going to be looking to 360 for games, as PS3 development prices continue to skyrocket due to overpriced bluray disks.

Who let the 360 fanboy in? Seriously, guy, why post in this forum? Microsoft paid Square Enix to port FFXIII to the 360; it had little to nothing to do with the market. It has to do with the obscene assets that Microsoft possesses, and still manages to release the least oustanding console (albeit a year early bravo).

At any rate, a 500GB Blu Ray Disc is more or less obsolete before it exists as regards gaming. While Blu Ray boasts significantly higher data transfer rates than DVD's, by the time games are 500GB, they're going to need very high data transfer speeds, much higher than BD's maximum. Expect a new technology by that point. We won't see a disc that big this generation in all likelihood because it's cheaper to compress data, and since a console architecture can only support a certain level of graphical intricacy, a 500GB "next-gen" game would have to be GIGANTIC temporally and spatially.

If anything, I think games are headed in the direction of Ratchet and Clank; episodic content that seems cheaper to consumers even though in the long run it's far more expensive.

TBH I've not seen a single game yet that reasonably fills 25GB without being excessively wasteful in one manner or another. So at the moment I am inclined to think it means nothing.Articuno76

MGS4 had to fill the 50 GB dual layer Blu-ray disk man. It wasn't even enough for Kojima.

I was under the impression that the reason installs were so popular was to even out the fact that the drive reads discs really slowly.

I think we all know that Kojima doesn't understand the fine line between comprimsing qualiy and just being a looney.

That's a reason. HDD's trump any physical media in terms of data accessibility. Even MS has plans for full installs to HDD. Something of interest, I don't recall Uncharted having any substantial loads, mandatory install, or a tremendous game data file.

500 GB Blu Ray Disc's have been announced last week and they are fully compatible with the PS3.

What do you think this will this mean for the future of PS3 gaming?

5UPERMARIO

You took my thread from system wars and any way Pioneer said it would be between 2010 and 2012 that an actual product would be available

and post a link next time.

[QUOTE="SonyMarksman70"]Important for the future, irrelevant unless used on top notch exclusives for now. Never will gaming be the same again. Its a good thing we won't have to wait on multiplat developers to make 360 & PS3 games equal. From now on ( late 2009 i'd say), PS3 will be a whole new ballpark, while Microsoft will realise that developers won't want them anymore, seeing as how 360 will be inferior to compete anymore. Honestly, no one would play 360 in such a case. First off, where is the proof that you read it, it's still highly doubtful that is true unless there is proof.Roland123_basic

seriously... think before you speak. oh wait, you are a lowlife fanboy. that explains a lot.

somehow i knew someone would try to use that comeback.... and somehow, it still isnt that funny. sorry :S

I found it funny.

Scanned the thread and didn't see where you specifically said "on the PS3".

bluray is made to play in 1080p. without a hardware change, i really doubt bluray will be playing at higher resolutions than 1080p. soooo how do you expect the PS3 to be playing this "ultra high definition blurays of awesomeness that are so ULTRA HIGH DEF that they are higher def than 1080p" Roland123_basic

Blu-ray is just a means of reading and writing data on a large capacity disc. Blu-ray discs don't distinguish content resolution, it's just a medium. The bottleneck is the source recording tech and displays.

... not to mention that there are really no plans for consumer line TVs at higher resolutions than 1080p right now. im sure they are being worked on... Roland123_basic

Samsung 2160p set.

Super Hi-Vision 4320p set.

but uh... yeah you wont see one in a store for years. Roland123_basic

Which brings us back to my bolding and underling of the word future.

how about we all agree that a 500GB blu ray disc won't be coming out for the PS3 for quite a while, if even. :)
