Whatever size you get, make sure it is SATA (NOT IDEE), runs at 5400rpm, and is 2.5".

thank you very kindly for the link i shall make use of it!

for everyone with upgraded hdd's what typically takes up the most space for your personal interests?

for me im thinking of alot of anime... haha that is not on blu-ray of course ^^ also how do you attempt your transfers? id assume media servers for me probably id burn a data disc dvd.. and finally i know many file types will not play on ps3 i dont think the divx is perfect aswell because i came across many that would not play (Al Pacinos Dog Day Afternoon xvid for example) so im wondering if ther is a program to convert files to the optimal type (perferably one i can transfer to PSP via memory stick pro dou) im pretty sure ther is an apple software one but i do not know what the program is called and i have a pc ^^

A wole lot of movies, tons of high quality songs, bunch of demos, psn games, game install data, thousands of pictures maybe, idk, people have theyre reasons.

People will never need more than 512kb, comes to mind whenever i hear this asked

bah i could easily fill it up with psn downloads alone without a single demo/purchase/dl file twice... easily nvm just a few compilations of artists music and just so many things just a few shows in ther entirety would slay a 60 gig homie... my ps3 deserves only the best haha n to tell you the truth 500 gigs to me isent nearly acceptable for hd content especially... thank god for blu-ray is all i got to say on that and ther is still alot i need that has yet to be issued on bluray... and just the space on stock ps3 hdd's are not bearly enough i hate deleting stuff to make room for something else hell i was planning to buy a terabyte but thats not even possible on ps3 yet.. 500 gigs i will have to make due :P

What takes up so much of my space are movies...I use a gig or 2 everyday. But, I have alot of throw away crap like demo's...and movies not worth keeping, whenever i fill up my 500gig.

lol, I agree...it sucks to have to determine what gets the boot when you really want some new content and you don't want to get rid of some great content you may have. And yes 500gigs is not enough for me. A terabyte would have done the job. I already have 41movies with other content and 350gigs left.

Lucky for me, my download is slow....otherwise I'd have about 300gigs left at this point.

yes i was thinking of something very similair more so back before hd dvd was extinct for like lord of the rings/ king kong/eastern promises/ the matrix trilogy and heroes but im sure its not difficult to find many other kick ass hd content to rip onto a nice olde fassion blu-ray:P lol blasphemty what i said the future is blu n the future is now!

I always thought of getting an external hdd but i dont think my sexy ps3 will approve haha ill make 500 gigs work... like my friend with the Sephiroth AC avatar said internet connection speeds will make sure it will be free for some time! ^^ we'll i gotta take off 2night ill ttyl have a good one guys!

Adding this hard drive means negating the Sony warranty doesnt it? if so its kind of dumb on thier part, i mean the 360 has an interchangable hard drive thats as simple to change as pushing a button and attaching the new one. Id assume sony would realise that the 40 gig drive thats currently attached to my ps3 Will fill ounce all the wonderful soon to release games are out, not to mention all the other crap i add to it( LittleBigPlanet's gonna eat up HUGE chunks of data) so why not let us tinker with the ammount of memeory or even release a sony brand version....I dont know i just felt like saying that^^ needed to get it outta my head, and im probably gonna get that nice little 500gig Hd ounce my warranty ends, be a nice litlle present for myself!

i doubt swapping the HDD will void the warranty since it tells u how to do it in the PS3 manual.

100% there's NO warranty void when doing this, it is in the manual of ps3.

the 360 is dumb on their part in that you have to buy a special hard drive just to change it and it costs more too. Also the max space you can ever have on the 360 is 120gb. Not good when rockband gets into its 3rd series and you want to dl songs.

get your hdd upgraded right now because it does not void your warranty sony allows you to replace your stock hdd with any 2 and half inch hdd you want

Yep I'm picking up my 500giger this weekend. As well I was googling around and found this info on 2.5 SATA HDD's all ps3 owners would like. "If you're still having trouble tracking down Samsung's SpinPoint M6 to boost your PS3 HDD storage space, Western Digital is now http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/12/western-digital-now-shipping-500gb-laptop-drive-220/ a PS3-compatable 500GB 2.5-Inch drive ($220), with a whopping 1TB drive expected by 2010. To quote: WD has just announced that it has started volume shipping its 500GB 2.5-inch Scorpio Blue drive, a notebook drive with 250GB per platter and a 5,400rpm spin speed. Seagate expects to ship its half terabyte 2.5-incher before the end of the year. Our sources say WD and Fujitsu will have 750GB 2.5-inch drives by mid-2009 and 1 terabyte units by early 2010, if not the end of 2009. WD is building quite a track record of pipping Seagate by introducing notebook drives at progressively higher capacity points first, doing this with 250GB, 320GB and now 500GB models. This may not continue as Seagate has been catching up and will strive to match and exceed WD. More PlayStation 3 News... " found this here http://www.ps3news.com/forums/ps3-hdd-news/ps3-hdd-options-western-digital-500gb-2-5-ships-1tb-2010-a-100843.html

try to consider the future. 8 years of downloading games off PSN, other DLC, storing music and game installs. over a lengthy period of time you will want alot of space if you want to get the most out of your console instead of erasing install data and having to reinstall all of your games everytime you wish to play them.
