Yea, its 55 due to some things already installed on your ps3 from production. System info etc is stored 5 gigs, everyone has this. Normal, there is no way to get those 5 gigs back.navigataYea. All the system settings like the XMB are in that 5 GB's.
Look at your computer's C: drive. I guarantee you $5,000,000 that your amount of GB total is not exactly what you paid for.
Example: You have a 160 GB HDD in your PC, it will say you only have 148GB of storage maybe. This is not only due to the OS software, but even before anything is installed you don't have all 160 GB due to formatting. This is basic computer knowledge.
well im assuming TC is wondering why it says 55GB and is not asking why he only has 23GB left. if ure wondering why theres only 23GB left then its because u have a load of stuff on ure HDD obhiously.
as for the 55GB bit, theres a few reasons. 1 is the way HDD memory is managed. some space (though not much) is lost to keep records of the addressable areas of the HDD.
2. when it says 60GB, its assuming (for some strange reason) that there are 10 bits in a byte. all HDD manufacturers do it for some odd reason. there are only 8 bits in a byte. the PS3 knows this of course so displays the actual space of the HDD. its the same on my PC. its supposed to be 150GB but its only 139GB.

okay im not THAT dumb LoL why would i be asking why theres only 23 GBs out of 55 left on (obvious?)
the first two posts answered the question you guys can let this post die out now
i only wanted to know why it said 55 max because i had my console exchanged and wanted to know if the previous owner had messed with the drive
so why do companies lie about this , it might not make a differnece on the ps3 but on the xbox 360 1st 20gb / 12gb
thats a dissapointment,
why do they lie , you should get the memorie you pay for.

they're not lying lmao it's just the way it is hey they could give you the 60GB but you wouldn't be able to use your PS3. Atleast it's not as bad as the 360.
1000 * 1000 * 1000 * 60 = 60 000 000 000
60 000 000 000 / (1024 * 1024 * 1024) = 55.88GB
Same with all harddrive on the market. They calculate with a factor of 1000 when the computer will use a 1024 factor. 1KB = 1024Bytes. False representation if you ask me. Just like only listing the maximum recording speed of a DVD recorder or printing the dynamic contrast ratio instead of the real, etc. Marketing.Killer_Cyborg
You beat me to it, I was just gonna put down the same equation.
the HD manufacturers use bytes. So it's actually 60G bytes but not 60GB. When you convertit back to bit, which is used by computer system, 2^10 bytes= 1024 bytes = 1000 bit. So 60G bytes/1.024^3=55.88 GB
[QUOTE="Killer_Cyborg"]1000 * 1000 * 1000 * 60 = 60 000 000 000

I got a 60gig harddrive so wheres my money!
on the 360 it's worse...12/20 :/stygiansanity
The 360 really only has 8GB of useable space? Is this true?! ...
