As the topic title says, I have a 60GB PS3 and a wireless Linksys B router. My connection for the PS3 simply will not stay connected. Basically I am looking for someone that might of had the same general issue and what they might have done to try and fix it.

A wireless B Router?

Does anything even support 802.11b anymore?

It won't stay connected, but it will connect. Lets start with that.

How are you connected to the router? Via wireless or via the 4 port switch on the router?

rofl B? omg is it 2000 again?

Here's my thoughts, go to Best Buy, buy a G router, that should solve your problems.

I am lucky to have a B, my mother was not even going to buy that back in the day.

It's wireless and I have opened the ports but still will not stay connected. Considering Sony has been of no help and neither has Linksys I figured this is the best place to ask.

802.11 B is not a gaming connection.  802.11 G is, you need to spend your own money on the G connection or else you won't solve the problem.  Hell, why do people even game wireless, no matter what connection you use there will be lag you won't get over a hardwire connection.

A wireless G router is an excellent idea for higher throughput, however it is not necessary.

The PS3 is fully compatible with 802.11b so there should be no problems there.

To the Thread-Maker. If you want my help you need to answer my questions.

I can't solve your problem if I don't know how you have it connected.

UPDATE :    Nevermind. I'm gonna go play Spiderman 3.

You should have answered my question the first time. I don't have time to deal with BS.

I had the same problems with mine, I went and bought a new router with the bigger attenaes so I could improve the signal strength as it was about 40%.  Also you may need to configure your router for a DMZ.

I have the same problem with a Wireless G w/ Speedboost router.  It will connect for a few seconds then disconnect.  Oddly ,it will stay connected throughout an update or demo download.  I did some searching on the internet and found there are lots of people with the same problem with no apparent fix other than hardwiring it.

I have a linlsys wireless-g w/ speedbooster and I have had no problems connecting and staying connected. Also signal stength is usually in the 90% range. Make sure all your security settings are in place and I also had to manualy type my WEP code in as It would not configure automaticly.

You dont have to open the ports because linksys and PS3 support UPN.

try to upgrade the firmware

I had a linksys b router before, and I got crap speeds on my ps3. Until I properly configured my router to increase the speed. If you want better speeds simply increase the throughput of your router from 1-2 mb to 3-5 mb in your setup screen.

that was going to be my suggestion. I have noticed that very few people actually upgrade the firmware on their routers.

For what you use the PS3 for right now, 802.11b is more than enough.  802.11g in a home is really only beneficial for transferring stuff on a local network.  I don't know of anyway for the PS3 to stream stuff over a local network.  So, 802.11b is more than enough for just downloading stuff over the internet.
