Hi lookin to buy a new TV and I was wondering if 60hz or 120hz is better. I want to play my video games and watch movies. Just looking for a straight answer. Thanks in adavnce.

120Hz on LCDs can add input lag in games since the tv has to buffer at least one frame in order to add the additional frames that make the picture smoother.
Honestly 60hz is fine, but if you are buying you might as well get a 120hz at the very least just for the sake of it. No since in 240hz cause they cost more than what you will get out of it. JMHO..
120hz motion only benefits films, not gamesmike4realzyup mikes right. it has no effect on games, just movies
There's actually a considerable difference when watching sports, movies, or anything else with lots of fast moving objects. BR movies look amazing on their own, but with 120Hz they're even better. With games you don't want more than 60Hz due to input lag as someone has posted already... especially in a game that requires quick reflexes like a FPS. The good thing is that most TVs with 120Hz have the option to turn it on and off.you wont notice any diff between the 2. you can save a couple hundred bucks and go with the 60 hz, and use that money for a bigger screen

^I can't stand Blu-rays in 120Hz. I would choose plasma 600Hz plasma >480Hz plasma > 60Hz lcd >120Hz lcd for movies. They just look un-movie like.
For those saying that it would have no affect, the interpolation will cause games running at 30fps to run at 60fps by doubling the frames that are being received from the ps3. But, the cost would be input lag which is a negative for most types of games. Also, the process isn't perfect so there will be artifacts added to the image.
this 120hz reduces motion blurUh... Ever heard of motion blur guys? 60hz suffers deeply from it, in both video games and movies.

I have a 120hz TV and game with the smoothing on and notice no difference in how the game plays whether I have it in Gaming mode or not. I do notice however that with gaming mode off, everything is so much smoother and looks better, especially panoramic camera work. I just leave it on, works great.
You should refer to it as 120 hz processing now. Since its not really 120 hz. The new 120 hz LCD monitors are real 120 hz monitors with a refresh rate of 120 hz.
120 hz processing is a nice feature to have. But you might end up hating it because it causes judder. The more you turn up the effect, the more judder. Judder is kind of like ghosting and its very noticeable. But if you can ignore the judder, 120 hz processing makes games look butter smooth or even more butter smooth.
But most of the HDTVs today are 120 hz standard. I think all Samsung HDTVs are 120 hz standard, at least the ones you would want to buy are.

really, i own a Sony Bravia, and when i don't have my GM on i notice nuisances almost immediately. something as simple as scrolling through the game menu in a game like Demon's Souls will cause slight lag. Dead Space looked better with GM off, but it still felt laggy to me. i try and keep GM on for all my games, and then the opposite for sports, movies, etc...

I have a Toshiba Regza and I notice no lag. The smoothing on the Toshiba is not as harsh with the "soap opera" look as the samsungs and Sony's though. it is a lot more natural looking. It could be the reason it doesn't interfere.
I have a 120Hz Samsung LCD and the lag was noticeable especially in games like guitar hero when every millisecond counts. No amount of tweaking could make it feel as right as my plasma.
120 hz or 240 hz makes EVERYTHING look better. Blu-Ray, games, you name it. I got a 120hz TV when Resistance 2 was new. The difference between 60 and 120 hz was amazing in the fluidity of the game.
u must of had a really crappy cable, cause i have this same tv setup and mine is spot on.I have a 120Hz Samsung LCD and the lag was noticeable especially in games like guitar hero when every millisecond counts. No amount of tweaking could make it feel as right as my plasma.

[QUOTE="Velocity"]Plasma has no ghosting. Panasonic Plasmas FTW!!!bloodling
That was my choice too and it turned out awesome! 600hz rules!
Plasma is far superior to any LCDs. They have the best black levels, no motion blur, no lag, best contrast, etc. If you watch the cheapest plasma next to the most expensive LCD in a dark room, you will pick the plasma as the better picture every time. However, Panasonic is currently undergoing some big time problems. Their black levels are currently doubling--this is a very bad thing. This means the blacks are lightening up and looking more lack blacks on an LCD. Panasonic claims that nothing is wrong with their sets and that they are programmed to do this to extend the life of the screen. This is absolute garbage, as models from just a few years ago did not undergo this terrible transformation.
Since Pioneers no longer exist, Panasonics are having huge problems, and LCDs just plain stink... I think all that is left is Samsung Plasmas. I hope Panasonic gets things turned around or what I would really like is for Pioneer to get back in the game. I want to upgrade my 60 inch, but since there is nothing that currently looks that great at the moment, I am waiting. I may go with a front projector and get a 150 inch screen to project on. You can get one that has similar picture quality to that of a Panasonic (before the blacks lighten) for about $4000. The only down side is you have to have a completely darkened room.
Good luck with your purchase descison. I say wait it out, or go with a Samsung plasma.
No one has any opinion on LED TVs?beekayjay
Plasma out performs them for half the price.
LED LCDs are the best of the best in LCDs (back lit ones, not edge lit), but still fall short of plasma and are insanely expensive. Plasma will most likely be king of the roost until OLEDS come way down in price. OLEDS will have deeper blacks than even plasmas and give you a picture that will look like you are really there.

I have a TC-P42X1 and the blacks are awesome in game mode, and for some reason the picture is a lot more detailed than without it. I tried the deep blacks option on the PS3 and it was way too black for my set, so people who have this problem should try it.

Wow lol, I have the exact same TV and I too, tried the deep black option on PS3 and it was was too dark. I changed it back to normal and it looked great.

Only problem is image retention (even though it's barely visible only when the screen is black) when playing bfbc2 for 2 days straight, but that went away in a day of playing other games.
The anti image retention scrolling bar is great for that, too. And if you watch tv or put the ps3 visualiser for 5 minutes before going to sleep, it reduces image retention greatly.
I have a 120Hz TV, but all my games run at 60Hz. They still look awfully pretty :D
Oh, and make sure it has a game mode. If you're going to be playing video games on it (which I'm assuming you are since you asked on these forums) having a game mode option is almost more important than the Hz. I find some games to be nearly unplayable with game mode turned off. Shooters are definitely hampered by it. Hopefully you like your new TV!
Exactly. With 120hz, playing videogames looks a lot better. There's less motion blur. There's also less input lag. Now, if you like motion blur then get a cheaper HDTV with 60Hz. But 120hz is almost the norm now. And HDTVs with 120hz are relatively cheap. Might as well go with the latter.Uh... Ever heard of motion blur guys? 60hz suffers deeply from it, in both video games and movies.

The "unmovie-like" feeling ur talking about has nothing to do with 120hz, but the "automotion plus" on samsung and "motion enhancer" on sony bravia. You can actually turn that feature off. I'm assuming ur refering to that sort of "hand held camera"-ish feeling when watching movies where the movie feels like its on fastforward but not.
Also the 600hz subfield motion on Plasmas is not the the same as the 60/120hz refresh rates on LCD. The majority of plasmas actually run on 60 or 96 hz.
We just picked up this very nice LG 42" 1080p 120hz LCD from Frys earlier this week cause the last TV's power supply was shot. I gotta say, the 120hz makes games like GoW3 ALOT smoother imo. You really notice it when its turned on. I can't recommend any other PS3 games that work well with it cause someone else has been hoggin the TV playing FIFA 10 on the 360 (Boo I know, but damn the game looks so much better cause of the refresh rate)
EDIT: But I gotta say, some things do not look better with 120hz to me, but you may see differently. Like just normal television programs or slow moving scenes, it makes it look sped up and un-natural to me.
right now there's no 120hz content, everything's either 24hz(movies) 60HZ (video games) but 120hz panels tend to be made of higher quality and you'll be well prepared for the future. BTW if you force 120hz on games or movies it'll look worse...
Having a 120hz tv right now it's like having a 1080ptv when everything's on 720p.
[QUOTE="PabloEscobar20"]plasma tvs suffer from burn in though, so they are not ideal for gamingJust get a plasma. You won't have to worry about refresh rates, response time or input lag.
LURCH87
new gen plasmas don't have burn in problems like the old ones(2005 and older). If you really hate lag(like me) then plasmas it's the way to go. BTW Panasonic makes the best plasmas right now (just look on cnet for more info).

motion blur it's a problem that only LCD and really old plasmashave. It has nothing to do with the refresh rate but with the MS(milliseconds it takes for the refresh).
