If you want to play it on your computer google "community codec pack" this will install all the necessary codecs to play h.264 hd videos.  For it to work on the playstation 3 you'll need to convert the avi file into mp4.

There have been petitions for wider video support and I sure hope Sony listened. Wider video support would encourage more ps3 users to put videos on their ps3s. not everyone wants to go through the hastle of converting them lol

I agree, the lack of avi support has pissed me off many times already. It takes about 20 minutes to convert  a 30 min avi file into a high quality mp4. They should also put in some "folder" type support so that you can keep ur videos in different folders instead of seeing them all scattered on the screen. For instance seperating family guy season 4 and 5 into different folders, etc.

And how does Sony make money by encouraging people to put their downloaded video files onto the ps3?  They make money by encouraging people to buy games/content off psn and blu-ray movies.

I dont think the avi container (Divx or Xvid codec) will ever be used for the PS3 or 360. I mean, you could play them on the PS2 and Xbox, but not without some homebrew programs.

How about adding streaming capabilities since most people prefer to lave their media on the PC? Transferring everything to the PS3 is a pain
