last night i bought a pre loved ridge racer 7 and to my surprise it ran at 1080p, an option that i haven't seen in a long time. Most games run on 720p, does anybody know why the majority of companies dont produce 1080p games? Just disappointed a launch titles does it and then it's like ok back to 720p.

On a side note street fighter 4 on xbox 360 has 1080p and on ps3 720p wtf?

In a nutshell the higher the resolution the more demanding the game is on the system. So "for the most part" when a dev makes a game they can choose to lower the graphical fidelity and increase the resolution to 1080p or they can increase the graphical fidelity and keep the resolution at 720p. You'll notice that Ridge Racer isn't exactly the best looking game, but if the developers say dropped the resolution down to 720p and the framerate to 30FPS then that game could look insanely good. My explanation isn't ALWAYS the reason and now that the PS3 and 360 are a couple/few years into their life, developers can crank out better graphics and possibly at 1080p - like God of War 3 is supposed to do.

As for the 360 version saying 1080p, that just means it is a "supported" resolution and not necessarily that it's natively 1080p. It's confusing as hell and it's important to note that the 360, unlike the PS3 has an internal hardware scaler that can "upconvert" to 1080p, so that is why you will see 1080p on the back of the box. Now from personal experience I really don't think there is a difference between running Madden at 720p on a PS3 and Madden at an upconverted 1080p on the 360. Maybe it depends on the individual, the game and the TV, but for me it's really a non-issue.

Very few games are legitimately 1080p on the 360 or the PS3. As mentioned, it's due to performance reasons. Hell, many games on both platforms are not even a full 720p, even big hits like Call of Duty 4, Halo 3, and Metal Gear Solid 4. GT5 Prologue also isn't the 1080p, but it cheats by having fewer horizontal pixels and then getting the PS3 to stretch it. Technically it is 1080 pixels from top to bottom, though, which is how they can get away with being misleading. Knocking back on the fill rate helps companies use more of the GPU's power for effects. 1920x1080 is about 2 million pixels that have to be rendered 30 or 60 times a second. 1280x720 is a little less than half that (920k).

Metal Gear Solid 4 supports every resolution up to and including 1080p... and it looks damn well amazing on both the graphical level and resolution level.
