Hey all,

Basically, my 60GB broke the other day, which means I have now had 5 refurbished units die on me. :(

So, I want to purchase a new model, and get away from the YLOD that the 60GB mostly suffers from. Now, I'm not too sure which PS3 to buy, the 80GB or PS3 Slim? I would have gone for the PS3 Slim, but I've heard it gets very hot, which questions the reliability of the system. I've heard good things about the 80GB too. Anyone here have the 80GB? If so, have you suffered the YLOD yet?

Cheers

I did get the Slim PS3 and its very unlikie the Slim will YLOD. Due to the fact the Slim uses less power than the 60 & 80GB.

Not true

Not even going into the whole "Sony's Slim power numbers are tweaked" when you look at how much the power has decreased in the Slim compared to how much the size of console has gone down the Slim actually has more power for it's size. The idea that it's power needs dictate it's reliability is false.

Nothing bad! It's in an open space (on a coffee table) and I always leave my window open to make sure there is enough cool air for the PS3. My launch one lasted a year and a half, but since I've been getting refurbs, they only last a couple of months. This one only lasted two.

I also hear the PS3 slim is very compact inside, which is slighlty worrying. Honestly don't know which one to choose! :(

If I make the wrong decision, then I'll be stuck with that model and if it gets the YLOD, I'll have to keep getting refurbs, until I buy a better model.

Thanks for the replies so far.

My 60GB just died yesterday, I personally think I'm just going to go the route of the slim versus a refurbished.

My slim honestly never gets that hot. I dont really do any marathon playing sessions though and always turn it off when it isnt being used.

my slim gets really hot at the back.. my 40gb doesnt feel as hot. i couldnt say what would be the most reliable choice as the slim isnt old enough to know of any problems.

The Slim runs cooler and uses less power compared to any of the phat PS3's, because it has a 45nm cpu. If you want to install Linux, you'll need a phat since the Slim can't do it. I would say go with the Slim.

Yep-I just bought a 80GB brand new last week.I was saving for a slim, but got a really good deal on a brand new 80GB-saved £50 on price of slim.I had a 60GB until bowt Feb of this year and i remember it used to run very Hot.But i've noticed that my new 80 runs cooler and quite a bit quieter, cos the fans aren't working so hard i guess?I'm well pleased with my 80 and glad i bought it-i actually prefer the style of the Phat PS3 over the slim, but also would buy a slim in future if my 80 ever breaks.

at least wait till the slim has been around for long enough for people to start excessively whining about it, then start to betray their ps3's and get a xbox 360 by which time the choice is clear, stick with what works (80 GB) *or you could go insane like my cousin and get a wii
