If I got a 16MB cache HDD, would the PS3 take advantage of the extra cache, or just treat the HDD like a 8MB cache HDD? Also with speed, if I got a 7200 RPM HDD, would the PS3 take advantage of the extra speed compared to a 5400 RPM HDD? I plan on getting a 320GB HDD when I get my PS3, but I don't want to waste money on the faster model if the PS3 will not use it to it's fullest.

Thanks for the help.

I was trying to find the article Gamespot did & here it is! http://www.gamespot.com/features/6192258/index.html

The article is a comparison between SSD & HD. This might answer your questions. To be honest, the differences are minimal at best. Just save your money & get a 320gig HD with 5400RPM.

Oh not to be rude but this question really should be in the PC Hardware Discussion.

I reckon it belongs here to be honest, seeing as the question posed, is whether the PS3 would take advantage of the features.

not sure on cache. But for speed there isnt much diff in performance between 5400 and 7200. 7200 might put out more heat. I put in a 250 gig a month ago and it works flawless 8mb cache and 5400rpm.. just remember wen u put in the 320 u will only get about 250-280 usable space. I only get 200 out of my 250 .... why buy the 160 gig ps3 wen u can get the 80 and bump the Hard drive to 500gig for the extra 100 bucks.

Yeah, same here. Tbh, I don't think there will be any noticeable difference in speed or cache size. I definitely wouldn't spend extra money for one. One with an 8MB cache size and 5400 RPM will do just fine.

No it shouldn't. I am asking about the PS3, not a PC.

Get the 8MB and 5400, the PS3 can't take advantage of the bigger cache or faster speed so you'd just be wasting your $$$$
