90% of the soaring PS3 Sales were 60GB models.

Gamer.Blorge.com reported that sales of the PS3 were up 178% in the UK but at that time it wasn't clear if that was due to the introduction of the cheaper 40GB model or the soon to be discontinued 60GB model which is being sold with two games. It's now been determined that the 40GB model is a certified flop.

According to PSPSPS, almost 90% of people buying a PS3 opted for the 60GB model which included two games for only £50 more than the 40GB model which did not include games.

It's not really clear what Sony's game is, first it was a 20GB and 60GB model and no one was interested in the 20GB model so it got discontinued and then it was only the 60GB model and now it's being discontinued and replaced with a less capable 40GB model.

The new 40GB model only has two USB ports (as opposed to four on the 60GB version) and has poorer backwards compatibility with PS2 games as it uses a software emulator and contains no PS2 hardware as the 60GB version does.

What's next Sony? Resurrecting the 20GB model, perhaps by introducing a "Slim PS3," who knows?

It's been suggested that Sony is using a bit of reverse psychology which makes about as much sense as anything else that's been said.

i really cant say that this is surprising, for only 50 more pounds, you get a lot more in the 60GB.

Yeah they are trying to clear out the 60 GB right now hence the insanely good deals. I suspect once they are out they will bundle the 40 GB with some things else and drop the price of the 80 GB or introduce another full SKU. I think they are trying a different approach.

A cheaper 40 GB wiht less options and a "premium" one which has eveyrthing for a bit more. I think this will work as alot of the people will see the full version for jsut a bit more and might go for that. And those that don't need all that stuff still have cheaper verison with most of the stuff.

I truely hope that the 2 free games with the 60 gig transpires to the United States , I was thinking of getting a 360 because of its price and 2 free games but I'm a Ps2 guy so I didn't rush my decision .I wanna play Resistance over Halo any-day .On a side note , what were the games being offered? At the end of October when you buy the Elite or the $350 version you'll get Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Forza 2 for free.

I hope the 60 gig deal comes to the states as well, I want a ps3 but I dont have the funds for one just yet so I think my chanches on getting my hands on a 60 gig is slim to none, maybe these sales will show sony that we NEED the 60 gig and not some watered down version and they should continue to make them.lethal18

I have the funds. $2000 is what Ihave for not wasting my money on apple products, cell phones, ora 360. I'm going crazy this Christmas.

This isn't about people wanting the 60gb over the 40gb it is about simple math. My brother is going to buy one in Sweden and here is the math that makes it a simple choice..

40GB -- 4 400 crowns

60 gb with extra controller and 2 games 5 600 crowns

The controller is about 500 crowns by itself the games can be had for 200 crowns each - he wants both RFOM and Motorstorm. So if you buy the 40gb you spend 4 400 + 500 + 400 = 5 300 crowns or spend an extra 300 crowns (50 bucks and get the 60 gb. Last week you could have had the 60gb for 5 400 so then it was like 15 bucks extra to get the 60gb - that is why the 60gb outsold the 40...

Still convinced the 80gb is making its way to Europe shortly - just doesn't make sense to announce it before they clear out the 60gb (think the last load was just shipped / arrived). Checking online it seems easier to get a Wii than a PS3 back home....

The TC's analysis is way off. What's going on is that bundle deals are moving PS3's, and the perceived "deal price" of the 40 GB will continue to move PS3 through the holidays. There is nothing to suggest that the 40 gig is a "confirmed failure" before it's even released.

Trust me, the majority of people who are complaining about the new model are on these boards. The general public is going to eat up the cheaper model.bsbowman

Very much agree with this statement, most people who post here believe that they are the only ones that exist. The general public (the one that makes all gaming industry prosper or fall) will be all over 40GB model.

At the present time 60GB sells remarkably because of great bundle package, once it's done the 40GB will step in with its own bundle.

Keep in mind that people who are buying 40GB model are those who wish to play PS3 games not the older generation. In that perspective 40GB PS3 is fully ready and bares no difference with its 80GB brother.
