which do you think is better? i cannot really play the PS3 until mid-June so i am wondering if i should get the current PS3 model and let it sit until then or wait for the future model. which version is better? please no bias answers if you already got the current PS3.

do you really care about BC? if not, then i guess you can wait. the 65nm CPU produces less heat, therefore MIGHT be quieter, but who knows. theres not really any heat issues with the current Cell processors, as long as you leave a decent amount of room for ventilation and the current PS3's are quite quiet anyway.

i go for the 65 nm...it produces less heat and doesn't need as much power as the 90 nm ps3. don't curse me if i am wrong ;)

Since I really don't care about backcompat too much, (I'm getting the new console to play new games...duh.) I would get the one with the smaller CPU.

The 65nm PS3 would supposedly be cheaper. Haven't heard much news about it, wonder when it's due?

90nm + hardware bc all the way. Software emulation (which may offer advantages for certain titles) can be done on any PS3, 90nm Cells have no issues I'm aware of.

they did it to reduce the manufacturing costs, not necessarily to reduce the price. sony won't drop the price for AT LEAST a year.

I don't care if mine doesn't have a 65nm CPU. For the future of Sony, I think software emulation + 65nm is the way to go to cut production cost.

wouldnt the 65nm be better because it would use less electricity which would save money, and produce less heat which would allow the console to last longer?

I would vote for the 90nm. I have that one and it's pretty quiet already. No heat issues as far as I can tell. So, it's pretty decent. Sony did a marvelous job on hardware. Next to no hardware issues. People are forgetting

if it produces less heat, sony may use a different cooling design. 65nm will most likely use less power, however, the difference would be minimal; maybe a few bucks a month at the very most. as for the BC, i don't even know if sony announced this for the NTSC versions, but if they are to follow the PAL version, then BC will be completely software emulated, so the compatibility will be lower. however, Sony announced they are aiming for over 1000 titles to be compatible, and there were ~2400 PS2 games released in Europe. N/A only saw about half of that, so well have to wait and see.

Backward compatibility is VITAL in an industry where moving parts are standard in consoles. You can't just take it for granted that there will always be working units of any given system available anymore, so you have to maintain software support in the current hardware to protect the playability of the back catalogue.

Either way you're still getting a very durable console. I'd go with the 65nm and the software emaluator-- whatever will make it cheaper.

by april, every PS3 in existence will run emulation. so even if you have a EE, it wont be used. the smaller chip is no different, just costs less, and offers slightly less heat production, but i doubt anyone will notice. obviously the emulation will be optimized for the greatest selling titles whenever possible, so 1000 titles is nothing to scoff at if they are all good titles, and it only makes sense to do so. so, your copy of barbie dream games will have to wait.

taking out the EE and changing the CPU to 65nm will obviously reduce costs. I am just wondering if this will lead to a price drop. Even though Sony said there wouldn't be one for 2 years the PS3 is in last place out of the 3 consoles. Less people that own it means less exclusives and third party support. if sony wants to win and sell more to the casual gamer they will have to drop the price as soon as possible. i am just wondering if these new PS3s will allow a price drop.

they are in last place, mostly because of their own previous console, which is still a great buy, with great games coming out, and they havent even launched in europe. the announcement of Home, and Little Big Planet, and everything else obviously made everyone change their mind. clearly everyone has changed their tune. they are putting those in to reduce their costs, so they can make money off the consoles. thats what ever console has been doing. Sony has their own studios that do just fine, and they support independent, lesser known studios. Sony has always made their best titles from independent and their own studios. do you people all have amnesia? this is exactly the same as last gen, they arent lowering the price for a while. my god, how do you people not know this yet, its been stated like 500 times, and its simple business, Sony isnt stupid, they obviously know what they are doing.

With the software, it would be possible to upscale PS2 games to 720p or 1080i. Do not fear though. People with the Emotion Engine in their PS3 will still be able to run the software. In fact, it wouldn't suprise me if Sony rendered the Emotion Engine completely useless in the future, so PS3s with the EE in them will use the software instead.
