I've already played most games people always recommend, like Resistance, Tales of Eternia, Crisis Core and others. They eventually get boring, so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me a good game that no one really knows about, but still pretty good. I like RPGs most, but any good game will do. Just don't say something everyone always says like GoW and MHF (I honestly didn't like that game).

Try Poplocrois if you want a SRPG with a good story, or Brave Story if you want a traditional JRPG with a good story.

I think its interesting, but I consider the gameplay too broken to withstand anymore. So I'm going to see if I can sell it and put that money to a Saturn or Dreamcast game. Or maybe a Persona 2 fund.

I'm sure I can get 20.

Well, I only plan on buying both halfs of 2. I own the first one (JP) and while the story is interesting the gameplay isn't at all enjoyable. I am borrowing the 3rd one, but so far I hate it. The only real one that hit the right notes with me was Innocent Sin, which is good because it has to live up to the kimi no tonari themesong. But I don't think the same notes are in 1, 3, or 4 so I'm going to pass on the latter 2 and will continue to pass on Persona until it changes it's style, which it will never do.

As for my RPG collection I think that the classic collection is mostly complete (Saturn, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast). I've found that I'm generally good at picking out which games are well appreciated for a reason and which games are less than stellar before I buy them. Right now I'm looking forward to Final Fantasy XIII the most.

Ive heard that as well, that P2 was the pinnacle of the series, but the again Ive heard the same about 3 and 4, which Ive actually played.

Im not too familiar with Saturn RPGs but I do have a saturn, so maybe Ill do some research sometime and see what it has going for it other than Grandia, Dark Savior and Legend of Oasis.

Do you update you collection in your profile? Im curious to see what classics youve aquired.

No, I don't but maybe I will someday. I'm also thinking of starting a blog.

Saturn's Grandia was the experience that defined the Saturn for me. There is also, of course, Azel. A very interesting game but massively overhyped. There are quite a few Saturn RPGs but I consider most of them to not be worth my time.

I'll list my classic library for you here now:

Playstation

Final Fantasy VII, VIII, VIII (JP), IX, Anthology

Chrono Cross, Trigger (from Final Fantasy Chronicles set)

Parasite Eve, Parasite Eve 2

Biohazard Director's Cut (JP), 2 (JP), 3 (JP)

Xenogears

D no Shokutaku (JP)

Echo Night (JP), 2 (JP)

Dark Messiah (JP)

Silent Hill (JP)

Crash Bandicoot

Persona (JP)

Gensou Suikoden 2 (JP)

Saturn

Shining Force III Scenario 1 (JP)

Panzer Dragoon Azel (JP)

Grandia (JP)

WachenRoder (JP)

Terra Phantastica (JP)

Tactics Ogre (JP)

Deep Fear (JP)

Burning Rangers (JP)

N64

Banjo Kazooie

Dreamcast

D no Shokutaku 2 (JP)

Sonic Adventure

Grandia 2 (JP)

Sega Rally 2 (JP)

... And I have many more PS2 games.

Color me impressed... and envious. While I have heard of pretty much all of them, I have only played an handful of those games but I have and havent played another handful.

May I ask 2 questions? Is Tactics Ogre for the Saturn exclusive? And do you understand Japanese/read kanji? You have quite a few Japanese games, and some that you can even get in English.

I've worked hard at creating this library, so thank you very much. There are a few more classic games I plan to get, but I also plan to buy a PS3 this year so that will be difficult.

You can ask me any questions you want. I'm happy to answer.

Tactics Ogre is not a Saturn exclusive. It is originally a Super Famicom game that was later ported to Saturn and Playstation. There is an English language (NA) version available, but it sells for 100$ or more. The translation, from what I've observed, seems to span from inaccurate to poor. What is exclusive to the Saturn version is voice acting, which is very good. The problem with Tactics Ogre is that it has this really cool font that makes kanji almost unreadable. Luckily there is an online Japanese language dialogue database.

I have been studying Japanese for a very long time, but I am far from being anywhere near the point where I can simply pick up a gameplay and read it all. I know about 300 or so Kanji but can probably recognize about 400 at this point with the help of videogames. I have a DS Kanji dictionary that I use when playing games like Gensou Suikoden now. But when translations are available I will refer to them, like with Grandia and WachenRoder.

There are various reasons why I own Japanese versions of games where the English version is available. For one thing, there are several old games like Tactics Ogre, Suikoden 2, and Panzer Dragoon Saga that are extremely expensive in English and not worth the higher price. Second, buying the Japanese versions of games usually ensures that you will get the game in much better condition, whereas if you buy from Americans the cases are likely to be broken, the games less complete, etc. Third, and most importantly, Japanese to English translations are often terrible. Sometimes I'll just buy the Japanese versions because I don't like the idea of buying a badly translated game. And of course there are other reasons as well like voice acting and the fact that I like the name "Biohazard" better than "Resident Evil." XD Oh and I only own a Japanese Saturn.

I actually have a few more questions. Which of the classic RPG purchases you previously mentioned is your personal favorite? And is there a classic your REALLY wanting to get your hands on?

Tactics Ogre is not a Saturn exclusive. It is originally a Super Famicom game that was later ported to Saturn and Playstation. There is an English language (NA) version available, but it sells for 100$ or more. The translation, from what I've observed, seems to span from inaccurate to poor. Ahh, I see. I thought it was totally new chapter but Ive played the Snes version which its a port of. From what Ive played its absolutely fantasti, its no FFTactics, buts its damn good, and looks insane for a Snes game.Unfortunately I was never able to play through it entirely.

Have you played throught it? Whats your opnion on it?

I have been studying Japanese for a very long time, but I am far from being anywhere near the point where I can simply pick up a gameplay and read it all. Your self learning? From what I hear thats pretty damn comlicated. No rosetta stone or other PC programs? If not, kudos.

Thats what I call a faithful gamer. Getting JPN versions of games because of better translations and better condition. Picking the JPN version of Resident Evil because it has a cooler name :P.

From what youve notice, what exactly are the Japanese to english translation flaws? Typos? Bad paraphrasing? Total change in dialogue?

hakanakumono

Above in bold. Wanted to break it down a bit.

Out of all of the classic RPGs, Xenogears is my favorite. If you've played Xenogears, if you make a list of the RPGs I listed that you haven't played I'd be happy to reccomend one to you.

Hmm ... Well, first and foremost I want to get my hands on Persona 2 Batsu. But I think you've played that, so ... Probably either Lack of Love for the Dreamcast or Princess Crown for the Saturn. Edit: Or maybe Vagrant Story for the Playstation, since I've heard good things.

-----

I'm on the second chapter of Tactics Ogre. My opinion so far is that it's truly amazing. The dialogue is simply fantastic, and the voice work in the Saturn version really complements it. The grinding necessary in the game is really an outdated relic, but it's not terrible. The gameplay is good, but what is most interesting about Tactics Ogre is definitely the story. Which changes based on the decisions that you make. I think I'm going to enjoy it more and more as it goes on.

-----

No, I've taken Japanese all throughout high school and am on my 3rd year in college. It's important to have formal education in Japanese. I don't think programs like Rosetta Stone are a good investment either. The best investment is college classes AFTER familiarizing yourself with Japanese grammar and writing.

The one game that I actually made consistent comparisons on was Final Fantasy VIII. There were major differences. I chronicled these differences in a thread that has died out now. I'm not sure how to describe the translation. The way things were translated just ... really cheapens the experience. I'll try to list things I remember in a concise manner:

1. Silly things like "HAHAHA" being added to the English version text after a villain's line that isn't present in the Japanese version. A silly accent given to a villain that isn't consistent throughout the game (if you played VIII I can explain). Accents that were added to fit Japanese sentence endings that would have been better off left out imo.

2. Characters being translated in a way that changes their person. Rinoa saying "Meany!" instead of "You're not nice! Not nice!" that makes her seem more like a 5 year old than an immature 16 year old (or however old she is). Squall's catch phrase being changed from "Sorry" to "Whatever."

3. An entire speech seems to have been grossly misinterpreted and the result is a scene that makes no sense in the English version. The Japanese allows it to be ambigious so you don't really understand the meaning of the speech till later in the game. But English requires for us to "define" it and it was defined wrong.

Overall it left me with an English version with superior gameplay and a Japanese version with a superior script.

Actually, like most of my RPGs at this point I have but have yet to play Persona 2, Xenogears or Vagrant story (I sampled Vagrant and Xeno though)... But I have played Princess Crown. I very fun 2D A RPG, a little on the slow side but fun none the less, I expected no less from Vanilla ware though.

Happy you like it, really wish I knew Japanese so I can enjoy the story as it should've been in English.

Ahh, so your taking it in college too. Atleast your approaching the Japanese language the right way.

Ouch, pretty crappy translation and transition IMO, I was planning on starting VIII in a few more days after I finish IV as Ive never played it, but now Im bothered with this knowledge :P

But thank for sharing and answering my questions dude :)

By "slow" do you mean "lag?" It was horrible in Odin Sphere, but I still like the game. I'd go for Xenogears if I were you.

-----

I still think you can enjoy Tactics Ogre. But it is expensive. And for some reason the font is abnormally large.

-----

I'd still play VIII anyways. It's still a great game.

No problem.

By "slow" do you mean "lag?" It was horrible in Odin Sphere, but I still like the game. I'd go for Xenogears if I were you.

Not lag, its nothing like that. It has slow paced battles.

The topic got lost in the woods, tripped and fell into a ravine, where it now lies gasping for air... tears in its eyes, its mouth opens and closes pathetically as it notices a tree branch is poking out of its stomach... its hands grow cold as it grasps desperately at the wound, its life blood pumping onto the forest floor... a lizard slithers onto a nearby rock, bobs up and down, then darts away... all is still in the forest and the topic's last thought is one of dull hate for those apathetically discussing obsolete games in places far away.

There's no such thing as an "obsolete" game.

Going by the definitions "no longer in general use" or "of a kind or style no longer current" or "outmoded in design, style, or construction"--then, yeah, sure there is.

You mean "outdated." Really, PS1 era games are some of the best games you'll ever find. Always a generation worth going back to. Which is why a number of the games we listed have been or are being ported to the PSP or available on PSN (in some region or another).

Kingdom of Paradise, Valhalla Knights 2, Warhammer 40k Squad Command, Bounty Hounds, Metal Gear Acid 1 & 2.

Few gems in there..

I second Metal Gear Acid 1 and 2. They seem to be rather underrated.

Been meaning to pick up a copy of Kingdom and paradise... but the rather bad rating from Gamespot has made me a bit iffy about Valhalla Knights 2. Could you tell me why you thought it was good? Never heard of Bounty Hounds, though. :P

Just really liked the feel of it. It's like a cross between Crisis Core, Monster Hunter Freedom and an MMO.

Crisis Core for combat (except that it's party based), MHF for the massive amount of free missions, weps and armor (over 100,000 combinations), and an MMO for the high fantasy flare and grinding feel.

High points for me were all the weps, armors and items (Im a customization whore) :lol:and the fact that literally every single thing you equip shows up on your characters.

Always thought a MHF clone with more true RPG elements would be cool, and thats essentially what it is. Addicting lvling system, very in depth AI/character customization, a pretty cool story, even if it does drag on a bit, and a massive amount of gameplay.

As close to a portable MMO as were probably ever going to get. Not perfect by any means, but still, I doubt the Gamespot review did it justice. They seem biased against free mission, grind happy sort of games..

Bounty hounds is more a niche thing. If Phantasy Star Portable and Untold Legends had a baby in a third world country, they'd name it Bounty Hounds..

Lol, thanks. You've got me rather intrigued about getting a copy for myself. Vahalla Knights sounds like something I'd play.

I was thinking about getting Vahalla Knights too, but gamespot gave it a low rating.

You make it seem really good, even though I didn't think MHF was that great.
