Hi all,

I have been a long-time fan of most Sony franchises, and am looking forward to MGS4. I have not, though, played any of the metal gear solid games. What were the best ones to play for the gameplay/story? Should I get the "collection edition" that is going to be released in March or chase down specific Ps1/Ps2 titles?

Thanks.

Definately pick up the Metal Gear Solid Essential Collection if you haven't played any of the Metal Gear Solids yet.

What Hazel said. It's coming sometime in March and is only 30 bucks for all 3.

get the collection because when you play mgs4 you wont understand the storyline. it will make more sence if you start with number 1 altogether.

Even if I did buy it I'd still keep it, despite having the originals. Only thing I don't have is PS1 MGS1. I do have Twin Snakes though. But I might consider getting it for MGS1 instead of poking around for some used scratched/abused copy. But some extra things would be nice though. Payton said on the podcast that there's nothing going to be added to it or any kind of director's cut.:(

The exact same situation here. That's why I've thought of selling Substance, well maybe I'll sell my old one and keep the new one...

Actually...both the ps2 games that come in the collection are director's cuts.

"The Essential Collection will compile the original PlayStation edition of Metal Gear Solid along with Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, both "director's cut" versions of the PS2 games."

Straight from Gamestop.

Susbtance and Subsistance are not directors cut... usually director cuts add more content to the story and the Ss don't do that. Still, those are the best versions of their respective games.

Well, I guess they were trying to have a more popular term for "enhanced version"

You will need to play all of them to understand MGS4. You have to play MGS1 and MGS2 to understand solid snake and how everything got the way it was. You will also need to play MGS3 and MGSPO to know about Snake's past and about other characters like Eva and Ocelot which play a big role in 4.
