yes up to 4. one person can be playing online, then if ur friend wants to join all he has to do is press the start button on the other controller and he'll jump right into the game and it will go splitscreen. this goes up to 4 players on 1 console. also if they want to leave, they can just quit but u'll still be playing without any interuption and it will go back to 1 fullscreen. pretty sweet imo. check out the video interviews on gametrailers

What happens if the game is full (32 players right?) and your friend wants to jump in? Does it just say something like "Game full" ?
The stat tracking is ridiculous. They track just about everything you can think of. Kills and kill ratio with each weapon. How much time you have spent on each vechicle. How much time you have spent on each map. Your win pct on each map. Your win pct in each mode. Its really impressive.

The multiplayer aspect of this game is one of its strong points. Right now, all my ps3 games are single player. It would be nice to have a game that has split screen co-op. Sure, UT3 and Haze will have stuff like that...but those are some months away.

Multiplayer is the only aspect of the game.
Well I mean like split screen multiplayer. B/c I want a game I can share w/ the people sitting next to me, not just passing the controller back and forth.

Yep, no foot steps but I believe they track miles traveled in each vehicle and on foot.
With a touch of the Playstation button on an inactive controller, another player magically pops into the screen. You can play offline or online with people sitting next to you.

Ooh good question! I wanna know this too!
I know another person answered this somewhat by saying it uses the XMB but it also has it own clan tracking system as well so it sorta is a combination of the two. I like this and it made it fun and easy to use so you could jump into any game, that was not full, and play with your friends.
I have not really looked too much into this game. I'm really, really anticipating UT3. If I get that, what will make me want this game as well? Anything? I'm not bashing at all, I just don't know what will make this one worth getting/downloading.
