so yesterday I'm all excited to go to ebgames cause I saved up money for 4 games I've wanted for a long time. I purchased InFamous, Bionic Commando, Ghostbusters and FUEL. I get home and turn on my PS3 and what happens. The Yellow Light Of Death. I almost cried. Thank god I hadn't inserted one ofmy new games yet or it might be lost.Now it will be months before I can afford a new PS3. 3 years of amazing gaming. My 29 games will be dust collectors for now I guess.

While waiting to save the cash you could try to R&R the HDD. Reason being is over time of heating and cooling cycles the stress could have losened the contact of the HDD pins and by simplely R&R the HDD the contacts could be reconnected. The yellow light is for HDD activity and if the contacts are lost then it can't be read. Also if this works and your not afraid to open the console completely up you can also clean the dust out with a good electronics cleaner or air in a can.

What is this YLOD all about? I got my PS3 exactly one year ago and I haven't had any problems.

Does the problem occur with models that were made this year, or just at any time?

To the people asking about YLOD, I believe it can only happen on the old backwards compatible PS3s.

I'm still pissed I got mine right after they stopped making those and took away all the nifty ports on the front, but at least I'm safer now I guess... I almost ripped part of the case off on the front because I KNEW the ports were under there! el sigh... lol

I believe if you ring up, Sony will take it in and repair it for you, but it will cost you as it's out of warranty. Last figure I heard on that was ~$150 (still cheaper than buying a new one, I guess).

If you don't have the cash, there is a known fix which will work about 90% of the time, and all you need is a set of screw drivers and a heat gun - though, of course, it requires you to open up your PS3. This is the best YouTube guide I could find for it.

it took 5 days and 177 cad to fix

My ps3 did the same thing today . i just turned it on then it shut it self off and the light turned yellow=((((((
