Just bought a 40GB PS3 that has 2 USB ports. Now I'm trying to decide if I want to buy Rock Band or buy Guitar Hero III.

I have played Rock Band and Guitar Hero before at a buddy's house. Rock Band was alot of fun when we had 4 or 5 people playing.....but I'm not sure how often I'll really have that many people available to play it. Actually, I'd probably be playing by myself about 80% of the time.

My favorite instrument to play in Rock Band is the guitar....although I did like the drums a bit also. One thing I really didn't like with Rock Band are the song choices. I really only like about 4 or 5 songs that come with the game....I know they are coming out with more all the time, but I don't really want to drop another $50 or $100 to buy 25 or 50 songs. I really like alot of the song choices in Guitar Hero III better.....

Is Rock Band worth getting if you really are going to be playing it alone most of the time? I know my wife and/or friends might play on some rare occasions, and I'm sure it would be alot of fun. Just not sure it will hold up well as a single player game. And considering the guitar is my favorite anyways, maybe I'm just better off with guitar hero.

Plus, would I have to buy a seperate USB adapter since the 40GB PS3 only has 2 USB plugs? Add in the adapter, extra guitar, extra song downloads, etc I would probably need with Rock Band, and it seems pretty expensive. Ends up being about twice the cost of guitar hero.

Not to mention, just saw my favorite artist (Def Leppard) has tracks coming out for Guitar Hero III this week. They are rumored to be coming to Rock Band at some point also but nothing concrete that I know of yet.

So just looking for some thoughts. Does Rock Band hold up as a single player game? I know it would be a blast if I had 3 or 4 people that would be able to play it alot.....but I've got my wife....who doesn't play video games....and my 7 year old daughter who really isn't interested. Basically it would only be fully utilized when friends and family came over, which is maybe once a month on average.

Thanks.

This topic has been made several times with varying opinions on each side.

Long story short - Most people seem to prefer Rock Band over Guitar Hero because of the 1) Extra equipment, and 2) More downloadable content.

Rock Band is great when you are joined by multiple people. There's a lot of DLC but pretty much all of the songs on the disk suck.

Guitar Hero is great when you are playing alone. It also has the better tracklist in my opinion.

I read everything you had to say, and honestly if you like the guitar, songs, and cost of guitar hero over rock band go with guitar hero. if you are worried about multi player with the fam occassionally... get some more guitars.

It depends, to me many of the songs on the disk were awesome in RB, while GH has 2 songs that I love and 2 others that I like.

Then I play mostly with my pals, so GH sucks there too, and its mono-instrument too. And then the DLC. GH has no DLC whatsoever, and all it had till now was crap imo. While RB got amazing tracks from Skynyrd, Wolfmother, Metallica, Sabbath (though it sucks that its a cover) and its going to get a whole disc of Judas and has Boston which has some amazing guitars.

Appreciate the thoughts.

Well.....I hesitate to say all the songs on Rock Band "suck"....I'm sure somebody likes them.

But my musical tastes are basically from the 80's (GNR, Leppard, Crue, Bon Jovi, etc).

I'm leaning toward just getting Guitar Hero. My wife only really liked the singing part of Rock Band....and I really only liked the Guitar part as I sucked on the drums.

Can't guitar hero also be played by two players at once.....something like with one on lead and one on bass?

My wife really only liked the singing part of Rock Band....and really only liked 1 song (Bon Jovi).

So guess I really just need to decide if Rock Band will offer enough for a single player to make it worth it when those rare occasions come around when we have multiple people in the house interested in playing.

I do get the sense that Guitar Hero might be more fun for one player. Is there enough "stuff" to do in Guitar Hero to keep one person interested in the game for awhile?

Anyone who says "I don't want to drop $50 bucks for songs I like" is just being silly. Would you rather get to pick 25 songs you like, or wait for more disks with the songs chosen for you? Some of the songs, if you buy them in packs are even more affordable than that. Me and my friend have now a library of 108 songs, the only DLC I don't like is that he downloaded the NIN pack (the songs are fine, I just don't like playing them).

Rock Band takes the cake in my book because basically I'm customizing my own game.

Edit: and drums freakin' own

How is Rock Band for single player games? Because that is inevitably what I'll be playing most of the time. Does it compare with GH III for a single player?

Just not sure I want to shell out $170 for the game....then also buy another guitar...and then start paying $2 per downloaded track. I'll end up spending $250 before I know it for a game to play by myself.

Don't get me wrong....I had alot of fun playing it when I've had a chance to play with multiple players. Just haven't tried the single player portions of it.

I've only played GH3 as Rock Band isn't out here in Oz yet, but from what I've heard the level of difficulty in Rock Band is a lot lower than GH3.

So if you are after single player guitar, GH3 may give you more mileage and be more challenging.

On the other hand everyone seems to agree that Rock Band is more fun - especially with more people.

I think if you haven't played either much Rockband would be OK, but if you ahd mastered Expert on GH then Rock Band might not seem a bit too easy (but then you can learn drums instead:) )

It seems to me a lot of the people on this topic dont read a damn word you say. Like the guy above me asking why you need a second guitar. Read his post again genius!

Anyway, I have GH3, and I love it. I have been playing GH since early December and havent got bored yet. Yeah, Activision doesnt come out with new content nearly as much as Rock Band, but when it does come out with some, its usually good. I mostly play by myself on the game and I have fun all the time, currently on Hard mode. And yes you can play with another person being lead/bass. I prefer GH because, as you said, its a bit more fun (to some people), and Its more affordable.

I am getting sick and tired of the users here acting like its set in stone to like RB over GH. Its retarded, you guys need to read a bit more, dont comment unless you do.
