I just recently copped the 200 dollar PS3 bundle for black friday last week(still coming in),
and I was wondering if it was a good idea to start a red-free collection.
I've bought a couple games so far, all black label. I hate how the red looks when
shelved with my other games. It wouldn't bother me as much if it was just that striped
label at the top but they just gotta make it so that the box is bloody red too.
Think it's doable on a tight budget? Assuming I spread my buying pretty evenly throughout the year.

Sure it's doable if you buy your games selectively, but it can be hard to avoid if you're looking to pick up an older game and can't find it in its original box. I myself avoid the red boxes as well.

This thread kind of represents racism in a way. But if you really don't like the red labels, you can always go to your local game shop and ask to buy the clear PS3 game cases considering they have them.

I have the same problem in reverse. Nearly all of my PS3 games so far have red cases. The clear cases look out of place. But yeah, finding new copies in original labels of games that have been rereleased as greatest hits can be difficult. Check behind the red cased games at some stores and you can sometimes find original boxes behind them. Other than that my guess would be Ebay and sites similar to that, or looking for used copies, would be your best bet if the game is older.

The red doesn't look bad to all... it sure beats the hideous grey and yellow colours for PAL platinum.

I was just like you before. I hated the red greatest hit cases. I only made the exception when I bought the Uncharted Dual Pack for $25. Atleast the cases go into a nice box cover. I would rather have Uncharted Dual Pack with the red cases in the nice box cover than the 2 black label games..... As for making your collection red free, you can definitely do that because there are plenty of cheap black label games used and new. The red isn't that bad though. It isn't as bad as those neon lime green games.

Ebay can be one of the easiest ways to buy old games for cheap and you can see the picture of what you are buying usually. Unless its in the description on Amazons used games, you never can really tell. Of course there is always Gamestop where the game is right in front of you.

Yes you can buy the clear cases by themself to change out, but I think it also has 'Greatest Hits' plastered right on the disc, so watch out for that as well.

What I hate most about the red boxes is not the red itself, but that all ps3 exclusives (and some multiplats) have cover art on the inside of the case, and a solid red case covers it up.

Buy some replacement PS3 game cases and just swap it out. That would be your easiest method.

Reach deep down inside yourself and ask a more important question? What would my ancestors have done in this exact situation? Would I even exist if they had the audacity to neglect color coordination? To disrespect color cohesion to the human eye?

Once you start actually playing your PS3, instead of staring at the cases for entertainment, I think your concerns will be alleviated. If the color of your cases interferes with the enjoyment of the games then we have deeper problems here. If you do go out and buy clear replacement cases I want you to consider your full stomach. Remember that many undeveloped stomachs are empty while your concerns lie with the colors of the cases that your VIDEO GAMES come in. The .50 that case cost is a beacon of energy for hungry, scared, children in ALL countries.

I'm not trying to be a jerk. It's just silly, selfish worries like this that are causing us to hide from deeper issues and pave our self destruction. Although all of the issues we have with video games are trivial in the scheme of things, this issue takes the prize. Could you imagine the feeling you would get when a beautiful little baby's eyes light up because it's her third xmas and she got her very first stuffed animal, and she does not even know what Xmas is? The feeling of GOOD that would wash over you knowing that you could have done better for someone else?

If you don't feel foolish emptying out and throwing away your red case in place of another when you know that it will change nothing in your life other then allowing you to consider more nonsense like this priority, then may this planet rest in pieces soon so we can start over because we are undeserving of the gift of life and human companionship.

The difference you would make and the pride you would feel would be incredible. I'm no martyr, but when I start getting wrapped up with nonsense in my head, and it happens all the time, I take a single dollar out of my wallet, I give it to my wife and we put it in envelopes for gifts for homeless children, food for the hungry, and peace of mind that although we still give into our wants, we don't forget the bigger picture. I add 4-5 bucks per week so that should show you that I am also a victim of "priorities."

My Aunt who is a university professor in Pittsburgh, tells me that I should not engage in "damaging" media at all. She says that purchasing and playing video games, is completely opposite my ideologies. My answer was that I have the right to choose and evaluate my entertainment and not hide in ignorance from reality. Knowing and evaluating the difference between wants and needs is the key most people don't have or at the least they were not shown how to open the door to personal fulfillment.

Short Answer: My advice is to take a deep breath and say, "This is a nonmatter. I will get through this, and be stronger because of it.""I don't want to bury my eyes from deeper issues by focusing on the cosmetic condition of the case in which the games that I like to PLAY come in." "By doing that, I am only contributing to greater issues negatively."

And that is my revolutionary idea for the day.

If none of this helps your thought process and I just annoyed the living $h*t out of you, and you want to punch me in the mouth, then do so, by driving to wherever you can and stock up on a dozen or so clear cases, just in case you get a red case through a gift or whatever. Come back and tell me you did, and we can duke it out over the next issue you have that will make a huge impact on your life.

Sorry for being a jerk. And this is in no way a direct attack on you, TC, it's just that I see these trivial issues so much, especially on gaming websites. I know we play games to escape from reality, but issues like this don't really concern games. These underlying issues are concerning our childrens future.

I'm sure you all think I am bat $*it crazy, but meet me on the street and you would never know unless you talked to me that this is how I feel. I am 23 years old, married for 4 years to my high school sweetie, a beautiful 15 month daughter, I have a better K/D ratio ratio than you, and I enjoy American values very much. Football, Video Games, guns, marijuana, alcohol, sex, hugs, and rock & roll are all things I participate in to this day. I just wish that I could inspire one person to give up $1 to something important instead of wiping their butt with it. At least consider it.

I apologize one last time. I don't know why this topic fueled this reaction from me.

Ditto. That is the *ONLY* thing that bothers me, and really it's only such a minor thing that I don't think I would bother to seek out a certain case over another.

I actually think the red looks better for certain releaseas anyway. I took a couple of exclusives that came in red case (but still had double sided artwork anyway), I stuck those exclusives in clear cases and put Red Dead Redemption and Mirror's Edge in red cases. If it's a multiplat that comes in a red case, I really don't care because the inside of the case would just be looking at the backside of white sheet of paper anyway.

Another thing you have to consider, is that if you get a "red case" version of a game, often times it will already come with all the patches already on the disc. But if you get a clear/black lable version of a game then you probably need to download a bunch of updates, so in many ways the greatest hits versions are better...

Meh, a case is a case. I'm not trying to design my room or entertainment system around the way my PS3 cases look, LOL.
