The first Devil May Cry revolutionized the action game genre by focusing on stylish gameplay combos which set itself above everything else. The storyline was also very good, I won't get into it here for the sake of spoilers but you can check a story synopsis on gamefaqs.
Devil May Cry 2 didn't exist, no matter what anyone tells you. Ok it did, but it wasn't nearly as good as the first and you'll be better off not playing it.
Devil May Cry 3 is where the series truly got its teeth, chronologically it's a prequel to the first one but gameplay wise it's far more advanced and still has one of the best action game combat systems to date. You start off with 4 playing styles: Trickster, SwordMaster, Gunslinger, and Royal Guard with 2 more unlockable during the course of the game. Using a certain style for extended lengths of time allows it to level up with each enemy killed netting you more moves and greater killing proficiency.
The greatest thing is that the combat is mostly freeform, there are a few combos that if you just button mash you'll see quite often. But if you take your time to learn some of the nuances you'll be able to pull off some pretty fantastical things. I only glazed over the games for you, if you have a BC compatible PS3 I suggest tracking down DMC1 and DMC3:Special Edition and getting your hands dirty before digging into DMC4. They shouldn't be hard to find nor that expensive, you'll get some much needed practice in the game's combat system, and you'll be able to take that much more from the DMC4 experience.
The main cool things about the game are the control scheme -which lets you jump, fire guns and generally kick ass all at once- and the comic book gothic atmosphere. Control-wise, I was reminded of DMC by Heavenly Sword, with the rolling dodge moves you can perform. But DVM is far more responsive, and the use of the jump while firing guns is a neat move. You get given Style ranks (from d to the highest, S), which gives you an incentive to replay certain levels to get a better overall score. As for story, i read books for that....;)
