The other day I was at my local Gamestop and I was scanning the PS3 section looking for something to occupy me until Arkham Asylum drops on the 25th. I then realized that I'm a picky gamer, but that aside I just couldn't seem to find anything that suited my tastes. Then as I'm getting ready to leave I notice a game I'd overlooked probably a dozen times; Far Cry 2. Understand something though... I'm not much for FPS games. The FPS trend has been quite an annoyance, but ANYWAYS! I scanned through the manual, and scanned the back of the box. For $24.99 used I figured what the hell and picked it up. Figured if I didn't like it I could return it within 7 days and get something else. So I brought it home and started playing, and I have to say that I'm QUITE impressed by this totally under rated game. I did do some research and there were some gaming communities that praised FC2, and others that utterly despised it. I don't base my opinion on reviews though, but I was shocked at the number of people that hate this game.

So this aside I was curious about everyone else' opinion of the game and was wondering if anyone still played online.

FC2 reminds me of a more realistic Half-Life game. Just throwin' that out there. So please share your thoughts on the game. One thing that was a recurring issue in the reviews I read and I have to agree to a certain degree is that the story feels a little tact on, and is weak. Anyways... thoughts?

I liked the game. The online sucks unless you are playing on some of the user maps. A couple of friends and I just play maps like "big jump loads of fun". But you are probably more concerned with the single player. You are never really safe because the two factions fighting do patrols and the have gaurdposts and what not. Think of it as the fps gta in africa. My favorite thing to do is look for diamonds and going into gaurdposts at night when some of them are sleeping then burning them alive with the flamethrower. Mean, Yes. Fun, Yes. That is half of the price I got the game for. Go get it

I picked it up the other day. It's fun a fun game to mess around on. I just recently unlocked the Flare Gun, LOL! It's about useless when it comes to ammo, but man has it gotten me out of a couple of pickles. I shot one guy in the face with it and he exploded into flames which I thought was hilarious. I had to pause the game and laugh maniacally. I'm most impressed with the game. I'm certainly glad I picked it up; It's a jewel. Fun fun fun! I'll have to try and sneak into a guard post and scorch a couple of guards with that flamethrower. I just unlocked it. :D

Personally LOVED the single player. The online was meh.

The fact that you can go about accomplishing the mission in so many different ways is awsome. Set a fire to create a distraction and than flank. Go rambo styles with big guns, go stealth...

The only negative in my opinion is the travelling, but that never really bugged me too much because I always made sure I had a jeep nearby and if I had to travel a long distance I would just hop on the bus.

I give it about an 8 out of 10 for the single player, maybe a strong 7.5 if I want to be tough

lol yeah being a pyro is fun in the game. One of my friends likes to kill with the dart rifle then jump into the battle which is cool but it just proves how many different ways that you can play through the game. The southern territory is sort of harder. Instead of someone at a gaurdpost sniping you they will shoot an RPG at you.

I bought the game the day it came out. I still play the SP and online today. I've never understood why so many hate it, maybe because the title isn't CoD and fanboys always run in packs. One hates it, they all do. I pretty well believe that all the people that say they hate it never played it for more than 30 minutes.

I've already traded in Cod 4, and Cod WaW because it just got repeditive. With the user maps you can make in FC2 it's like getting a Map Pack everyday for free.

Lets wait and see once you have completed the mission where you driver 50KM to do one thing that could have been done before you traveled the 50Km and and then they give you another middle finger by making drive another 50KM after that. Then you probably wont compare it to ha;f-life TC.

I REALLY enjoyed playing through the single player. MP was the laggiest and worst FPS MP I've seen since the 360 came out. SO horribly bad, but the single player has like easily 25-50 hours of enjoyment for an FPS fan. I give it an 8.5 out of 10.

Part of what made the game so awesome to me was GETTING to the objectives. That's part of it man. Getting there is basically the whole mission, and you can do it in so many different ways. Sneak past everyone at night, swim and traverse through a narrow river canyon to avoid conflicts, cruise there blasting everything on your way, etc etc. The open endedness needs to be TAKEN ADVANTAGE of.

I understand that and i do appreciate the realism and how you are fully in control but i like driving for that long is just a way to kill time, they have have atleast put more interesting animals there.

The game sucks, in my opinion. The gun play is absolutely weak feeling, the weapons selection is large, but all felt basically the same. The environment was well designed, but inherently dull and boring. The story was non-existant. The voice acting was at times indesipherable due to how freaking fast they spoke. The malaria pill situation was an absolute pain in the ass after the first few hours. There was little to no variety in missions. Driving between said missions was tedious and boring, not to mention the fact that your lucky if you can go 500 yards without being attacked by a patrol. It did certain things right, but they were vastly overshadowed by the glaring flaws.

The only reason so many people hate this game is because of how incredibly mindless everyone on the internet is.

Someone will play the game and love it.

Then someone else will play the game and hate it. Then they'll pass this hate on to other people and then it spreads like disease. Soon enough, everyone's got the same opinion about something they're completely ignorant of in the first place.

Kinda like bandwagon.

These same people follow reviews to the letter. If a reviewer hates something about a game, the player will hate it too.

I don't like these people because all they do is follow the hype train. They're the reason why games like Shadow of the Colossus or Okami don't ever do well, but if it weren't for them these games wouldn't be such hidden gems.

There's sort of a balance - can't have good if there's no evil, but that's a different story.

Oh, I wasn't defending the game, as I've never played it, so I don't have an opinion about it. I was defending games that get hate like this, such as Assassin's Creed.

I was never really interested in Far Cry 2 to begin with.

Unlike many, you have valid reasons to hate the game and an explanation.

I don't know. It was pretty opinionated. The weapons are totally different, the story is completely there (nothing outstanding), the malaria thing I feel is a legit complaint, as far as walking 500 yards without being attacked? Try sneaking. You can get anywhere you want without getting attacked. The game IS NOT a straight up shooter so it can't be played like one. It's like people who hate Fallout because it's not a real shooter and can't be played as such. Just laziness and an unwillingness to appreciate what the game has to offer. As far as the environment goes, it looked and felt legit. Real life landscapes don't have 100 different looking areas, but rather flow and look consistent for hundreds of kilometers. They went for a realistic terrain in this game, and totally got it. Plus if you go and take off-road routes to your objectives (that is, instead of just running towards it, check your GPS and plot a BACK ROUTE as there are hundreds), you will find much breathtaking scenery and landscapes. The game DOES have alot to offer, those who hate it hate it blindly IMO. If you can't find anything to appreciate with Farcry 2, you haven't even given it a chance. Guaranteed.

Alright, I get ya. Some times the hate is well deserved though. Farcry 2 is certainly one of those times. A game that was in development for so long, with such high hopes for it from so many fans, and they substitute 30 minutes of driving in between missions and amazing graphics for any actual content. :x Personally I think thats Ubisofts new modus operandi. All of their games lately have been visually stunning, and yet lacking any real depth.

The weapons in their set classes are not totally diffferent, whatsoever. You could go through the entire game with the first set of weapons. The first assault rifle is no different from the AK-47, nor the M-16. The first handgun is no different from the .45, nor the .50. The first sniper rifle is no different from the AS50. There's really no reason to unlock the weaponry if you play the game stealth, and if you don't the game has nothing significant to offer that isn't done better in just about every other FPS. I also didn't say walking, I said driving. You cannot drive 500 yards without being attacked by a patrol. Driving is not optional with the distances between most of your destinations, unless of course mind splitting boredom is up your alley. As for the game "not being a straight up shooter, so it can't be played like one." Bull. The game's developers left it up to the player's decision on how to play it. It can be played as a straight up shooter if thats what you choose to play it as. But playing it as such is underwhelming and boring. I also said that the game has its merits, but that they are overshadowed by flaws. I didn't say the game was 100% useless. It had some great looking terrain occaisonally, I enjoyed the fire mechanics (though they were under utilized, the fires burned out far too quickly), and the day and night mechanics were impressive. Overall though it was a nightmare in my opinion. Which means no less then yours. :)

And that's why I have no further comments :). You know how it is, gotta defend the games you love against haters :). Also maybe this "mind splitting boredom" is up my alley, because I drove as little as I could because of the attack problem, and it didn't bother me. I just found back routes and crept around, I enjoyed it alot more then driving. Or just drive along the borders of the map as close as you can to the objective and then walk. I may have to boot up the game and play through it again actually...

Oh yeah. I'm a HUGE fan. Homecoming I never finished though, it actually scared me too much because of the primarily melee combat system. I just like shooting evil things, not beating them to death :(. Awesome game though. Silent Hill and Silent Hill 2 go down as some of my favorite games ever for sure.

I thought Far Cry 2 sucked. I don't see the appeal of driving around place to place to do a mission that requires more driving to the other side of a map to kill a few people.

It looks good, but plays horrible.

The things people sometimes cite as realistic about this game are the things that I find annoying. Guns don't break down after a day of shooting. Guard posts don't get replenished with men within 2 minutes after you kill them all. Off-road vehicles don't travel at the speed of light to catch up to a criminal. There are some good things about the game, but all of these problems coupled with the poor multiplayer and malaria is why I, and most others who hate this game do so. Glad you guys like it though.

It is not a bad game. I certainly enjoyed it. The thing is even I got bored of driving constantly from one end of the map to the other and stopping at every check point to kill the guards. So instead of driving around all of the time and killing all of the guards, I waited until it was night time and I snuck around through wooded areas and river banks. If I got tired of walking around, I got in a car, turned the head lights off and drove up to the check points and sniped all of the guards from a distance or used mortars. If I got tired of that, I drove around on the desert area with no enemies bothering me. There are so many ways to get from one place to another in this game and it is awesome.

I'm surprised at the response this topic has gotten. Most ot my topics die off rather quickly.

Moving on.

FC2 has quite a bit to offer but it's not for everyone, no; I'll agree. The lack of mission variety is a nuisance, but then again it's no different from every other FPS. You're primary objective is quite simple. Kill or be killed. That's the standard formula used in ALL FPS games. What sets FC2 apart from other FPS games is that it's not linear, and there are SO many different ways of accomplishing your mission. The scenery isn't dull and boring, it's lush and beautiful. Granted the malaria is a pain, but it added more depth to the character in that your placed on the battlefield in the middle of a civil conflict in a country that's known to be disease ridden and dangerous. I guess I just get into the characters too much. There' a lot of solid arguments there's no denying that, but I find it to be a superb game that though it has it's flaws has quickly become one of my favorite game in it's genre.

lol, It seems like this game really is bad.

Now I kinda wanna play it to see for myself... I might like it, though, as I was one of the minority who hyped GTAIV to high heaven and still loved it.

It really only matters if you like in the end. This truly is a love or hate game.
