Does this mean it will upscale PS3 games from 720p to 1080i?

I hope since i have an older HDTV which sees only 480p/i and 1080i.

Meh, thats whats people are talking about. Though don't worry much about future ps3 games, since like everything released today has at least 1080i. Vf5 said it only did 720p, but i got it to output 1080i. What ticks me is that internet reports saying the ps3 actually has a hardware scaler, but sony either forgot or was too lazy to activate it. Talk about rushed.

Nobody knows... all you'll hear is wishful thinking. Wait for an official Sony announcement. There is so much hope on the PS3 board, it's kinda' beautiful.

Hes right. Only certain ps3 games will do the 1080i thing. I dunno how vf5 runs in 1080i, i just have 480p/720p/1080i selected in my ps3 xmb and my tv says its 1080i in vf5. Maybe its because i'm using hdmi, but that should have nothing to do with it. I just wanna know is the 1080i horizontally upscaled or native.

Actually I read somewhere about hdmi cables doing something that component cables can't. I'll try to find the link, I think it was on this board.

that dependends on the source, i would think vf5 in native 720p so 1080i wouldnt be its native resolution, making it upscale

Depends on what you mean with you can't.....you have the PS3 output 720p - MOST 1080i tv's can accept it and converts it to 1080i. But you have to have the PS3 set to output both 720p and 1080i to do this.......so I am playing Resistance in HD on my 1080i tv - makes sense...

I was talking about if your hdtv didn't accept a certain signal. Most people want upscaling, because hdtv itself upscaling is pretty laggy and looks bad most of the time. A relatives hdtv only did 480p/1080i, and vf5 played in 1080i but resistance would do 480p max. Its mostly 1000$ projection hdtvs that can't do 720p. I think nearly every hd crt on the market can display everything upscaled, besides 1080p.

My tv is four years old and was pretty cheap back then and does upscaling fine. Most people want upscaling because they don't understand that their tv can do it. They set the PS3 to output 1080i and 480p only then they complain..............helped two people that I know with this so if that ratio is telling for the general population then that is the issue......... projection tv's can't do 720p, but they accept the signal fine.

they probably did it that way stratigically, so people people buy bluray movies. Or they really didnt want to release in in november originally and just did it to make microsoft rush their console (which they did) could be really smart!

I have a 480/1080i crt, obviously when i select 720p the screen goes black for the 30 seconds or wahtever and goes back to 1080i. Are you saying that if i select 720p as well as 1080i, when i play games such as resistance or other games that say only 720p on the back, that they will be displayed in 1080i??

Once the ps3's internal is fully unlocked, the ps3 should scale everything just fine. Here's the link about the scaler: http://www.beyond3d.com/articles/ps3scaler/makingmusic476

To summarize what that confusing article is saying, basically the ps3 does have an internal scaler, however it was originally locked to devs.

So far, Sony has only unlocked the horizontal portion of the scaler, so the only way for a game to upscale to 1080p, for example, would be if the game already had a vertical resolution of 1080, but a lower horizontal resolution.  This is why it is currently up to the devs to design there games to be able to be upscaled (like Sonic).  Currently, devs must use an alternate lower resolution like 1280x1080, or 1440x1080, instead of the natural 1920x1080, so that the ps3 will then upscale the horixontal portion of the game to 1920.  The vertical resolution MUST already be 1080, as that portion cannot be upscaled as of yet, hence the funny resolutions.  If they used a resolution with a lower vertical resolution of, say, 720, the games max resolution would be 1280x720, as it would not be able to upscale the 720 to anything higher (or lower) than it already is.  However, the vertical portion would be scaled automatically to 1280.

Once the scaler is fully unlocked, however, the ps3 should scale any game to 1920x1080, as it will be able to scale both the lower horizontal and vertical resolutions up to 1920 and 1080, respectively.
