I know Metal Gear Solid 4 is going to be an awesome game that all of my friends will be playing this summer, and I don't wanna be left out. But... the problem is that I haven't played any of the MGS series. Although I played halfway of MGS2. Am I going to be really lost in the story mode and be completely oblivious to what's going on in the story. Or is the plot somewhat easy to understand and follow? Even though I haven't played the series I still have some basic knowledge of who's who in the game.

Should I still buy MGS4 regardless? Plus I don't feel like buying the trilogy pack of MGS and playing it for the first month of summer, I want to get right to MGS4.

Luckly for you, Kojima Dumbed down the story so people new to the series can follow it easily.

Konami says that even if you dont know the story it will be easy to follow, but seriously, is a long and complex story that is almost obligatory to know it all in order to enjoy MGS4.

In gametrailers there is a recopilation of all mgs series to the nintendo games to MGS2 and next week MGS3 so maybe you can check that out if you cant play the games

Dont worry, Kojima said himself that even new comers will have a blast. But the thing is, if you even know the summary of the previous games... it will up your anticipation and you will understand the characters even more. My tip:- Check out the Metal Gear Retrospective series which summaries all the previous mgs games, so far part 3 is out.

Also tru out the Metal Gear wikipedia if you wana know even more detail of the previous stories.- metalgear.wikia.com

Awesome. Thanks for your help guys. I guess if the story is quick to understand like you all say, then I won't feel so guilty anymore for not playing the first ones. I may miss out on some inside jokes throughout the game, but I could always have some of my friends fill in a few holes while I'm playing the game.

The story is one of the most complex in the history of any series. One top of the other suggestions you could buy the comic book version of MGS1 which has really cool art. Whatever you do, don't go into the game without knowing anything about the story, I know what Kojima said and it still doesn't convince me that new comers will understand the better aspects of the story.

Well, I thought you'd be used to these topics by now... and expect more even after MGS4 is released.

TC: No, don't get MGS4, in fact don't get any MGS. We will be better without one more newb asking wtf is going on.

Why are so many media outlets saying its overly complicated if its been dumbed down, also to the TC there may be points where you get lost even if you played all the games, so I wouldnt be too worried about it.
