Well, I'm quite worried that my PS3 might defect since some idiot of a cousin of mine turned the power off by switching the back switch rather than using the controller or the power touch button. Now, I'm quite worried that something bad might happen since I heard problems occur when you turn the power off through the back switch. I currently own the old 80GB PS3 model, and I'm just wondering. Is my PS3 going to be safe?

Should be. My brother does it to his PS3 quite a lot and everything is in perfect working order.

Well I'm hardly an expert, but I wouldn't think anything would happen at all unless the hard drive was reading/writing data at the time. Even then, there's no guarantee that would damage the PS3.

No, nothing will happen. It's not something to do often obviously, but it's not going to ruin it once unless it was at a severely inopportune moment of the Playstation's processing or something. :P Do not fret.

You should be fine. As mentioned before, don't make a habit of it but otherwise it should be unaffected.

For some reason when my PS3's crashed and ive turned it off from the back then restarted it, there hasn't been any picture. So i've then had to reset the display settings. After i've done that it then won't let me set my display at 1080p. I have no idea why.

Fixed it after a while though.

Nah you don't need to worry about it, I have unplugged the power of my Xbox 360 sometimes when it completely froze up.

Turning your PS3 off like that will affect the data on your HD more than anything else. Hardware wise, turning off the power should not do any major damage.

There shouldn't be a problem with turning the power off by the switch. I have power failures here from time to time and it has never caused a single problem, even happens when on a game playing on-line without a problem after power is restored.

I just flicked the back switch for the first few days I had it, like I always did with my PS2. Then I read the instruction book & the horror stories on the internet, & since then I've always turned it off from the XMB first, & only then use the back switch. Still no problems with it. Mine's a pre-owned 60GB & I will have had it for a whole year next month! Yayyyy.

Well, the damage of data results due to damage on the HD in some sort. There may not be a physical damage (but it can get one), but on a logical sight there will be a damage which results in loosing savefiles and such

Only Problems with turning it off from the back is if you have the hard-drive writing something when you turn it off.... and the other thing is electronics don't take well to being turned on and off completely, it's not that it will blow up or anything just the change from hot to cold put's stress on the components.... so making a habit of letting the system heat up and then turning it completely off might result in a hairline cracks in the transistors down the road....but generally turning it off from the back isn't going to immediately turn your system into a brick, nor will it usually harm your system if it only happens once in a while.

Basically don't worry about it now, but try to keep it from happening too often in the future ;) .

You should be fine. One of the biggest dangers of shutting off the power directly is that the PS3 could be writing something to your harddrive at that moment, which could corrupt your HDD. If it worked after you turned it on again, there shouldn't be any serious long-term issues.

if u shut down the ps3 through ur dualshock or sixaxis or even the main power in the front of the ps3 and THEN turn it off from the back thats fine. but if he just randomly went to the back switch and turned it off that way, well nothin major will happen but i fu keep doing it without properly shuttin it down first and then using the back switch u either might lose ur saved data or crash them or even mess ur ps3 up.

Having this happen one time won't hurt your PS3 just don't do it all the time. you should be fine.

It's just another power switch. It's not like you're unplugging the console while it's running or anything. :|

I think the only thing you have to worry about is corrupted data. However, I've never turned off mine from the back so I'm not 100% sure.

Hmm....that's true. I just flip the back switch off during storms so my system doesn't get fried....or at least get fried as bad.

One time the chord got unplugged during a game. PS3 works just fine. Data for that saved game became corrupted. The PS3 is a HOSS! Much worse has happened and that beast keeps on truckin.

You should make sure your cousin doesnt do it in the future.

But dont worry. I always turn my PS3 off from the front power switch adn THEN the back, and i never got problems. Just dont turn it off only from the back.

If it's just once, then there's nothing to worry about. If it's done often, then something could eventually creep up. Most high end electronics do that and why they have notices of "proper shut down".

I've done it before out of frustration when a game kept freezing. Its ok though. The worst thing you could do is when its installing or saving, and it tells you not to turn the power off. The whole system will probably corrupt :?

Exactly what I was going to put. But I reccomend leaving it on standby, and never turning off that back button.
