Am I the only one who finds today's standard of frame rate atrocious (consoles)?

By no means have I been a prominent gamer on modern day systems, though in comparison to the experiences I've had very recently (more so GTA4 on the PS3), I'm looking back more fondly on the generation of systems that actually produced games their console platforms were capable of running. When I brought my copy of GTA4, the first thing that struck me right off the bat, was the stuttering frame rate. Now don't get me wrong, it's not un-playable by any means, but for those who like our entertainment seamless & without horrible glitches, this generation just doesn't seem upto par.

Immediatley I started scouring reviews online to see if my opinion was echoed, oddly it was not, and I couldn't see as to why there wasn't more discontent than what there was. I consulted my friend & he echoed my concerns, as we talked about the standard of today's games, believing games are now obviously punching above their weight on systems that simply can't handle them.

In an industry which is allegedly now becomming as big or bigger than Hollywood, I don't think it's un-fair to expect the same kind of smooth & seamless presentation from the game world, as we'd expect when watching a movie.

Thoughts?

Can you guys, hand on heart, honestly say to me, when the game gets hectic, you experience not a hint of a slow down at any point? I find that hard to believe.

Ive had only problems in Broadway. Aside from there never had any. Also, GTA has always been riddled with this since III. Alas, many games dont have such issues, and its from my personal experience a problem that happens mostly in Western developers because they try to pull amazing things to early on the console life. Aside from that, a 25-30 FPS rate is a great number, yes of course, 60 is even better and 120 is the best but you wont notice the difference until it reaches under 20.

Sure certain games like GTA4 will sputter here and there (no matter what they say) but as long as it's not unplayable then it really never bothers me. It's not worth getting upset about it.

I agree with you on GTAIV. I've played it on 360 for over 70hrs and love the game. However, it gives me headaches when I drive fast. Initially you don't notice any framerate problems, but when you move fast or things get hectic, it feels like you're stuck in mud. Hard to explain, but I know it has to do with framerate. Does anyone know what the framerate on GTAIV is?

As for your question, I do think it's dissapointing when "next-gen" games have poor frame rates. I know developers are limited by hardware performance, but it seems like some games ship before they're finished.

There are definite framerate problems.

Framerate problems have always been around - even on old systems.

The most notable could be seen on Nintendo 64... go and play Turok Seeds of Evil. Great game, but there were framerate problems.

I don't get how people can say that there are no framerate problems.

The game is noticably choppy frequently. Not unplayable by any means, but not as smooth as let's say... Resistance.

My thoughts exactly. I do believe that the standards should be higher. With newer tech and more capable systems it shouldnt be a major problem. Not everything is gonna be perfect though.
